Much like this forum. However everyone is entitled to their opinion, thats what makes the world and this country a great place. Without different opinions we would probably end up like the old Soviet Union or North Korea. The only thing I find unpleasant is if you disagree with the remainers on this site is you are instantly branded stupid or racist.

Yes, one of the things anyway.
"The only thing I find unpleasant is if you disagree with the remainers on this site is you are instantly branded stupid or racist."
Speaking for myself, I have no problem whatsoever with people who express a point of view that I disagree with - as long as they do so intelligently and reasonably.

Is that why the UK has just overtaken the US for being the top destination for investment despite Brexit? Bet you won't read that in your beloved Guardian. For the record Labour are just inherently split on Europe as well, always have been, the true lefties have always been anti EU, its just the Tory wannabes like Chuka and co that have pro Europe.
Can you post a source for that, please.
I just looked up Wikipedia and we are third behind The Netherlands and the USA, the EU as a whole gets more than 50% more foreign direct investment than the USA by the way.

Every time gazzer and jonno open their mouths I despair at how limited the understanding of Brexiteers is and that they are the ones who have seized control of the country. Utterly fooking depressing.
I think you are an arrogant tedious 'fooking' bore if its any consolation.

You prove my point. You are another grotty example of some of those on here with a total intolerance of others views. When you getting your own column Spruce? You seem to think you are the boss of this board..

You know what? If I did have a column I know you'd obsessively read it!

One question I would raise here is about how this survey defines investment.
When someone says that country X is getting a lot of investment, I'd take that to mean that companies were setting up there, building factories, opening offices etc.
However, what this story says is that foreign companies are buying existing British companies, which would suggest to me that profits made in the UK are now more likely to be taken overseas, making us poorer in the long-run.
And as Herbivore says, the article also mentions that one of the reasons is the weak pound - a major fear around Brexit is that any kind of economic shock will be a catalyst for the cheap sell-off of more of our assets... And are investors banking on us becoming some kind of low-regulation outpost where they can increase profits by not having pesky rules on corporate behaviour?

Spot on.
The economy has contracted by more than 2% since the vote and companies are queuing up to buy undervalued British assets.
There has been capital flight of more than £2 trillion pounds from the City this year alone and the BoE had to extend QE and provide billions in emergency funds after the vote.
Anyone who thinks this is an economic success story hasn't got a clue.

Indeed - e.g. Comcast's acquisition of Sky for $39bn. I presume a significant chunk of this went to Murdoch.
Am I right in my understanding that a US company paying Murdoch (outside the UK) for a UK asset counts as "investment in the UK"?
It's just one foreigner buying the rights to future (UK derived) profits from another foreigner.

I think if you look the EU are still doing QE not just the UK, who if my memory serves me right are not doing so now. We were hardly a success story before the vote in most socialists views anyway before brexit. The EU is on course for a pretty bad downturn at the moment, dragged down by the southern states. Strange really the very thing the "collective" EU is about, are prepared to bankrupt those economies. Can you imagine what the people in Greece are going through? finding their pensions have been halved, youth unemployment at record levels across the EU. Why do a lot of young Europeans still see Britain as a good place to come and live and work, maybe we can't see it ourselves. As for the comment the economy has contracted by more than 2 % that could be subjective as to the reason, it could be because we are still suffering from the last financial crash. But Great Britain does have record numbers in employment, something to be proud of. Better to do a part time job than claim benefits. (before all the negative comments about poorly paid jobs and the gig economy)

Only a moron would work part time and turn down benefits if it didn't pay enough to cover the rent.

And that my friend is the problem, no aspiration.
Wrong.
The issue is businesses not paying a living wage.
Come on, this is basic stuff matey, not difficult to follow.

When is this EU downturn coming? When's the € crashing? I keep hearing about this, but it never seems to happen.
Anyone got the Q4 2018 figures? A quick google suggests EU growth at 1.5% and the UK at 0.2%, but I'm not convinced these are correct or comparable.

No food leaves no room for aspiration. That policy is a busted flush.
Indeed, it's rather easy to dish out high minded ideals when you're able to afford your living expenses.

That is a survey, not audited results. You should know better than that with your Price Waterhouse background. Sorry to be so admonishing and hope that the recovery from your operation is going smoothly.

Your last sentence is particularly tragic when you consider the lead the United Kingdom used to take in standard setting and the trust that others used to place in us.
