Not looking hopeful at all now. That's gone up really quickly.

But very labour intensive and limited in size of structure.

200 years to build - they don't make 'em like that any more!

Don't suppose the organ's survived - another masterpiece mentioned by a musician last night.

Hats off to the firefighters - what huge guts to climb up onto the burning structure (because it was too tall for hoses to reach) to try and put it out when so much of it was aready engulfed in flames. Absolute heroes. One badly injured apparently, hope they recover OK.

Poll: Why can't/don't we protest like the French do? 🤔

Apparently the organ is damaged, altho it's not known how badly.

I liked the robot with attached fire hose the firefighters used to go inside the nave when it was at risk of collapse.

Speculating here but, it may be lead workers or roofers doing a hot melt. They would be highly likely to have inflammable items and welding gear on the go.

Edit; Truly an incredible shame.

The sort of thing that can happen all too easily, as our friends from North of The Border can testify.

What do they know? They just needed some flying water tankers to put it out, job done.

Fireman. They were up in the towers trying to stop the blaze spreading. Also inside, attacking it from below.

according to the bbc website: "Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was happy to send experts to help restore the cathedral."

cathedral experts! oh come on, putin's clearly having a laugh.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Nothing worse than a damaged organ!

Although it's sad to see the destruction, we should remember that many, many brilliant buildings have had the same happen and come back even better. It's an opportunity.

'Bots definitely have their positive uses!

Heard some expert interviewed (on R5l midday news or just after I think) saying that the organ's mostly survived OK, hallelujah!

Mmm, the spire which so dramatically fell in around 6.45pm yesterday was apparently a 19thC rebuild of the original.

HoP v. much at risk. One silver lining of yesterday is that the custodians of many ancient buildings are now hastily reviewing their safety & strategies in the event of any outbreak ...

Much of the interior damage appears confined to the south transept and below where the spire was. Tho there's a lot of water damage inside as well.

Still, there have been many fans of cathedral spires that have been shocked by the news.

I have to say that I found this as distressing as watching the fire at Windsor Castle.

Ironically a French girl damaged my organ once.
