Ipswich to London in 60 minutes 10:20 - May 20 with 2656 viewsGeoffSentence

Today's the day the fast service begins.

The first one left Ippy at 09:33 should be arriving at 10:30, my national rail app claims it is on time.

Who needs HS2.

Doesn't this happen anyway?

The 5pm from London arrives in Ipswich at 5.59pm.... when it's on time.

I haven't been on an Ipswich to London train since the 70's.
What are they? Inter-city 125s. Electric powered locos pulling carriages.
Got any pics?

Agreed, this seems no faster than the fast trains that have been operating for years. Would hope an improved service would cut the journey down to 45 minutes or so. That would be very good indeed.

So is it skipping stations in order to get there on time?

I'd prefer free wifi, a comfortable seat, on time at both ends and a fare that isn't the price of a flight to most destinations in Europe than a journey 20 minutes shorter

Inter-City 125s ran their last journeys from Paddington to Wales and the West Country on Saturday, although they're still going strong on some routes out of Kings Cross.

Agreed!

I paid £30 yesterday for a single to Liverpool Street from Ipswich with a railcard! Fees are astronomical these days and every year it seems rail fares are going up by a few percent.

In that case First (worst) are running the new Hitachi hybrids that broke down on their first run. Grayling was on board which obviously jinxed it.
These trains will go electric all the way to Bristol Parkway and then switch to the diesel engines to get into Bristol Temple Meads because they can't be a*sed to electrify the last 5 miles.

Same issue with Swansea. It was going to be electrified, but the Tories pulled the plug as they do. So it's only electric to Cardiff.

You'd think a modernised high speed link through the the ports in Pembrokeshire would be a minimum.

Freight remains diesel though doesn't it? Probably too expensive for the volume of traffic to electrify all the possible branches I suspect.

Utterly stupid and short-termist (how unlike Grayling) to cancel the rest of the passenger electrification on the SW route and have to but expensive, unreliable trains as a result.

We're in the middle of booking tickets for our interrailing trip around Europe in the summer. It's crazy how cheap some of the European stuff is compared to here. I wanted to take the train up to North Wales this weekend, but it would have been £240 for a family of four. We're paying €80 total for a 6 hour trip between Austria and Slovenia in the summer. And then they wonder why people use their cars instead (same applies to bus fares).

Yep, freight probably does in fairness. Very short sighted, even with lower numbers the only way they'll open up rural Wales is with better links. and as you say they've now go to double up non technology, which is a complete waste (but that's probably the train operators' problem).

One of the benefits of our antiquated rail system is that British diesel locos are used across Europe to help them to build their new electrified and high speed lines.

Isn't it the case that even Morocco has more high speed rail miles than UK!!!

It's much simpler to build high speed tracks in other countries.

Morocco - nobody lives or owns great swathes of the country so planning is easy.
China - everyone does as they are told so planning is easy
UK - everyone complains, argues or owns the land and thus it's impossible to get anything done.

It was great for the Victorians to be the first to have all this stuff, we are paying for it now though.

I assume, that with the Norwich in 90, Ipswich in 60 service starting today, that this means the end of the ongoing engineering works.
