AMSTERDAM 81 12:36 - May 20 with 3644 views | ONEKEVINBEATTIE | On this day twenty years ago i was in Amsterdam to witness Mick Mills lifting the UEFA Cup! I was 20, still a student and not sure how I afforded the trip. Can't remember much about it to be honest apart from it being a very hot day, having a few of beers in a park in the city and watching all the young ladies cycling round! I still have the programme, my match ticket and an AZ Alkmaar scarf I swapped for mine after the match. Anyone else have any memories of this fantastic day?

AMSTERDAM 81 on 13:14 - May 20 with 3409 views | Blue_Order | New song coming next season celebrating the victory. “Out in Amsterdam in 1981...” Edit - Should probably be “Out in Amsterdam in 1999” though I suppose. [Post edited 20 May 2019 13:18]

I was 14 and listened on the radio. Remember the last 15 minutes seemed to take forever. Parents then let me sit up to watch Sportsnight - still about the briefest highlights there's ever been of a European final (certainly in the colour TV age).

We did. The poster was just a bit late getting there. Couldn't find Mick or the boys anywhere. The blighters wouldn't even let him into the ground even though he had a ticket.

Think it was cos Ajax had a much bigger ground. Was only a school kid - would love to have gone - and was about 25 years later (on Twtd) that I discovered the match wasn't in Alkmaar as I'd always thought/assumed.

Think it was because of the fact it was a bigger ground. And given the reputation of English fans abroad maybe they thought they could control it better, not knowing the nature of Ipswich fans. Not sure but there were quite a few empty seats as you can see in the highlights.
