Heard my first one of the year today, better still I succesfully tracked it down and watched it calling untill it took off and flew right past me.

What with the brown hare, swifts, courting skylarks, green woodpecker, whitethroat that I swa en route, along with the sound of a tawny owl calling in the middle of the day - not a time I have heard them do so before, what a lunchtime walk I enjoyed.

Also, I saw various types of bee, but was careful not to put any in my mouth.

He has taken a little while to get this far north from there. I hope his robust calling works and he finds a suitable mate.

Had one pretty much all last Summer at the bottom of the garden but not heard one this year.

Only heard one this year. We now have swifts and swallows in abundance, late this year. Saw a woodcock fly over my road just now, low looping flight, nice to see. Chiffchaffs and I think Sedge Warblers (not 100% sure). I am lucky where we are, we regularly see Barn Owls. Just Turtle Doves to go now. Tawnys call all night around me.

That's a good haul. It's years since I have seen a turtle dove.

We have been spoiled on that front the last few years.....have heard it several times this year but yet to see it. Did see it a few times the last couple or three years though, Cuckoo appeared about 2 weeks ago.

I've noticed a lot of jackdaws around, this year, at both ends of the country.

Can any ornithologist, here, explain this sudden abundance?

Species expansion.
Eg. Collard Dove. Wasn’t recognised before 1950 as a UK species, but spread from Turkey to Western Europe.

Eg. Little Egret, until 1990s wasn’t recognised as a UK species, now it’s as common as muck. I was watching the boats come in at Felixstowe from Shotley, there was no end of Egrets. Beautiful birds.

Eg. Ring Neck Parakeet. Introduced into the UK accidently by whom and when unknown, now it’s a regular at most bird tables around London. Apparently there is a pair in Ipswich too, they will spread, very quickly.

My next guess is the Great White Egret which is now spreading north from Africa and Southern Europe.

All these species spread due to perfect conditions, food, climate and so on.

So, the same for your Jackdaws. Just perfect conditions to spread.

I'm still hoping that a pair of jays who used to be visitors to our garden will make a return. I fear they have passee.

On the plus point, have had a young robin visit for 2 nights without any fear.

He seems to have gone already

In previous years we would have calling cuckoos for weeks.

Over the last two or three tears we have had a cuckoo call for a day or two and then nada. I wonder if he has torn around his territory for a bit giving it large, but no girly cuckoos have answered his call so he has moved on.
