Been happening everywhere for a lot of years. I was at Northgate Sixth form about 10 years ago and a few of my friends were firmly encouraged to find somewhere else to study / get a job after poor AS results. Really poor from the schools in question but it comes from placing more importance on league tables than a well rounded education. |  | | |

That's really out of order, any vetting should have been at the entry stage.
They should now be focusing on giving the pupils the help they need to progress.

There is a wider issue - the use of sixth forms and even university as a form of creche to keep 16- to 21-year-olds out of the job market as long as possible.
League tables are a daft idea, it was always obvious they were going to be open to abuse and manipulation. Teenagers are not "products" to be turned out to a certain standard, educational progress is variable and not always smooth. Further and higher education is about personal development as much as gaining specific qualifications. |  |

If they're doing badly and A Levels are clearly not for them surely its in their best interests to advise them not to waste another year? |  |

When I was at Ipswich School back in 01 doing GCSEs we were doping 11, or 12 if you were in the top set for Maths - at the girls school they were doing 9 and girls were being pulled out of some to keep their stats at 100% A*-C |  |

It happens across all levels of education; primary, secondary and tertiary. For all the good things schools and colleges do, the bottom-line is their performance in those league tables and that’s ultimately where judgements are based rightly or wrongly. It’s a sad indictment of what education has become, it’s a sorry state of affairs really when schools have to resort to this type of thing because of the pressures being applied on them from outside agencies.
