Does anyone else 'love' what they do for a living? on 13:32 - May 21 by giant_stow
That Kinks fan* I mentioned before has retired after painting hospitals for 30-odd years and is completely loving retirement - couldn't be happier. I thought it might get boring, but he's like a pig in sh1t - glad to hear the same goes for you.
*husband of my old nanny! too much sharing again.
I played my Kinks-The Ultimate Collection double CD a couple of days ago-Lola keeps jumping though!

Nope, it's alright and I like bits of it, never dread going into work but overall it's more of a means to an end than a passion.
Some of the negatives relate to the work environment and certain individuals who would probably make Roy Keane seem a good manager in comparison. Others the need to do work out of hours at times, although the flip side of that is that a good amount of flexibility when it isn't busy so the work-life balance is ok (and I don't need to feel guilty about any TWTD-time at work).
On the plus side, I'm doing something new at the moment which is more technical and therefore quite challenging and there is a responsibility on me, and the wider team, to get things right - the consequences of not doing so could be costly.
There are things I've done previously that I moved away from because I didn't want to spend my whole career doing them (electricity regulation for example) that might have lead me to something more interesting now but I would probably have earnt less and done some less interesting stuff over the last 13 years or so instead.
'certain individuals who would probably make Roy Keane seem a good manager' - that's quite a telling phrase Steve!

I don't think I actually needed 'probably' in there.....
I'm generally well out of the direct firing line, not even in the same timezone but the overall effect of even one person like that is wearying cynicism and then sooner or later something gets fecked up because people stop raising valid points only to be shouted down.

Nothing like a mood hoover to make everyone miserable.
He's a bit of an odd ball but his actual PhD work is quite interesting. Basically taking psychology and not looking at why people are unhappy, but what is different about the very small percentage of people who are actually just happy.
I feel very blessed in my job. I teach guitar in a load of schools in Essex as well as private tuition and gigs. I am very lucky because I get to see my kids way more than most would and my work offers loads of flexibility and time off. Since the tories destroyed music education in schools though it has been pretty tough keeping the money at a level where the mortgage is paid and we are comfortable. These things tend to be cyclical though and will improve in time.
I basically play guitar, bass and ukulele as a job so have nothing to complain about!

I do. I work for an organisation directly combating the likes of Nige and the far right. And by God do they hate us.
Good motivation to get to work every day.
Pronouns: He/Him/His.

I am a fisherman, I used to love it, but The Eu are strangling the life out of us and isn’t a viable business anymore, it’s such a shame we have lost all of our fishing fleets. People won’t get fresh fish in the future, it will be fished by a few massive trawlers and the time that fish hits your plate it can be up to 2 weeks old.

My dad and grandad were Lowestoft trawlermen. Although the EU did impact the UK fishing industry, it's worth noting that most of its decline was down to successive governments awarding contracts to larger firms who simply dredge the sea. That is the real problem, and the reason behind the death of small-scale UK fishermen.
Industrialised fishing is down to our government, buh, not the EU. We had the option and ignored it. A massive shame and missed opportunity. I doubt we'll see the likes of it again.

Also letting massive foreign trawlers decimate our coast, with the inclusion of pulse trawling which since has started fishing has plummeted more than we have ever seen, luckily they will be banned by 2020 but the damage has been done. I do agree that it is our fault as well, well ted heath to be precise who sold us all down the river, and looks like it will happen again, but you are wrong that by being in the Eu means we have no say on all the foreign trawlers, I see it everyday mate, they are raping the seas.. And if we can control our waters we could put a stop to this which would make a huge different for the inshore fleet.

I’m almost at that point. I’m a support worker for Mencap, I love the variety - knowing I’m not going to be staying in the same building for my entire shift is very nice. There have also been some highlights; I took a chap in his 40s with Down’s to watch Joe McElderry sing in a musical in Plymouth. We were at the front and I managed to get McElderry’s attention and he waved at the chap I was supporting. His face afterwards was brilliant, and he mentions it to me most shifts. I also like the feeling that I know I’m doing something which is important to people.
I’m also a singer/ guitarist on the side. I’m doing a fair amount of gigging, will be 1 or 2 a week in June/ July. That’s my ultimate ambition, to be able to make a living from it - I spend a load of time writing and am about to record my first EP.
And to think that 9 months ago I was worrying that I wouldn’t be able to fill my time 😂

Where do you fish out of, buh? Many boats still going?
Few still go out of Lowestoft but the numbers are declining rapidly.

You are still going to university though I take it? IF so, you will go into it a much more rounded person after this year.
