Does anyone else 'love' what they do for a living? 12:32 - May 21 with 9337 viewshomer_123

I genuinely do - and feel that I am probably in the minority.

Don't get me wrong, there are frustrations, annoyances and days when it's stressful etc. but I really do love what I do.

Anyone else?

I'm not sure I've ever really loved my work.there have been odd days here and there but I've been doing the same sphere for over 15 years and it simply isn't for me.

Sadly, like other posters I'm stuck as I am well paid but have 3 kids, mortgage etc so changing is near on impossible unless I sold house and downsized which isn't practicable.

It doesn't help that my new company is gambling software so I'm under no illusions that my work has no benefit to society.

I'm trying to impart on the kids to study and or focus on what interests them so they don't fall into the same trap.

Another one for the joys of gardening club here......watching the orchard I planted years back develop brings a certain satisfaction as will watching the 400 trees planted this winter. The wildlife around it is also an unquantifiable pleasure. Whether my aging body will feel the same levels of joy during hedge cutting, leaf raking and beyond is another matter.
Also re another thread.....no pension!

love mine (supermarket deliveries in Devon).... though the pay sucks .. and I dont tend to get to see ITFC play that often .. but after being ill with severe depression for 9 years from teaching and running my own business no desire to change at all or go back to something better paid.

Not even when having to carry heavy shopping up multiple sets of stairs to flats or getting stuck in narrow tiny alleys or behind tourists with no clue where they are going.

Definitely. If I was 65 and retiring now my time would be spent reading, playing golf and walking football and travelling. Money depending of course which is why I want to start saving plenty.

Just be careful where you live and what you do, after my accident and the DVLA taking away my licence (back next week hopefully) I have to rely on the bus but walking football is on a Sunday and no buses on Sunday.

I somehow retired around 60, more a case of flouncing out of a self employed position and being too half ar$ed to find another one. Although I am comfortable I still want to do something but, at 64, not sure what. And I have a novel to write as well.

You could become a high class male escort. Decent money and you get to meet new people.

High class! Well, thanks, but I have already been told that my proposed Tinder profile of 'Ageing shortarse who is going deaf' won't work so I am not too hopeful.

On the other hand (that could be an unfortunate choice of phrase) everything still works and I am desperate so I guess I have more to offer than 90% of the male population.

Being partly deaf may help when dealing with members of the fairer sex.

It doesn't take them too long to get wise to when you switch your hearing aids off though.

I've enjoyed reading through this thread, hearing people's thoughts on their work. Nice one Homer.

Its nice to see so many people doing things to make a positive difference to others, and recognising that as a motivating factor in their work.

I wouldn't stretch to loving my job, but I'm certainly very happy in it. It's varied and I'm working for a fast growing business that's really enjoying it's time in the sun really, so that makes life a little easier. I know I'm paid very well and the relatively small team I work with are lovely and a pleasure to spend time with. I have a bit of a plan, longer term, to do something a little different, but I need to make some hay while the sun is shining in order to make that a reality. Perhaps 5 years from now I'll be in a position to pursue that, but a lot can change in that time. Like most jobs there are pros and cons, I travel a lot for work which friends are often envious of but the reality of being away from a wife and baby for a week is often hard. I was in LA for a week in April, off to Hamburg for 3 nights next week and Chicago and Hong Kong for a week each in June and July. Most months I average about 5 nights away, which is a nice opportunity to see a bit of the world but when working and not being able to do it with friends or family isn't the same.

But yeah, I work hard for my employer and they look after me, it's a good arrangement really. I'm happy to compromise on certain things now when I'm early 30's etc but when my daughter is a little older and we perhaps have another I certainly want to be doing something that allows me more time at home.

I'm a bit the same. Had a stressful job that was very bad for my health but am very lucky that we're in a position that I can now work part-time in a minimum wage (worthy) job that I love. I guess we've reached our work/life balance point.

Yes sometimes I'd love to go on the fancy holidays friends do or buy a new car, and our son sometimes says he wishes we were rich and lived in a posh house like some of his friends (and so do I). But at the end of the day you have to assess what's more important to you, as I explain to my son we could be much richer but I then wouldn't be around for the school run and his dad could get a better paid job but he would then be travelling most of the time and not see him. So we've gone for happiness over wealth but I guess we're in the lucky position where we cover our mortgage and bills on our current wages.

I work in project management for the government in Whitehall at the moment and am about to retire. Over the past 12 years I’ve been lucky enough to work on some of the ‘topics of the day’ including the current one. It has been interesting, challenging, difficult, boring, sometimes satisfying, long hours at times too. Enjoyable? Certainly I’ve had a great social life out of it and met some lovely people. It’s also paid the bills! Before the Civil Service I worked for an IT company as a product manager - loved that. Before that, some contract work. The first chunk of my career was in retail banking. Although I progressed ok I didn’t enjoy it and should have left sooner.

Overall, I’ve been so lucky. This has been especially highlighted in recent times. My mother died in care home last year having been there since 2015. The work the staff did there was amazing and humbling. Compared to whatever I may or may not have done (and been well paid for), that was real work I could never do. I truly admire them and all those that work in the care system/nhs/hospices etc.
