What isn't fake news is that British Steel had to give the EU for £120 million worth of payments under its Emissions Trading Scheme. Under the ETS, heavy industries which face international competition are given free allowances of carbon credits to meet the EU demands. But although the UK is bound by the ETS until December 2020, the EU has decided to stop issuing free allowances to UK firms.

You really would have liked that article I posted. “British Steel could have avoided asking UK taxpayers for a £100m rescue if it had saved permits to produce carbon that it instead decided to sell in an ill-judged bet on the EU’s emissions trading scheme. The metal manufacturer cashed in on allowances it was granted under the Brussels scheme aimed at curbing climate change. The scheme requires industries to match each tonne of emissions with an “allowance” or permit.” Management gamble that didn’t pay off.

Perhaps the leave side should have mentioned that to the people of Scunthorpe before they voted to leave? It's unfortunate but this isn't the EU's fault. It's a result of what the people in that region voted for. It's literally reaping what you sow. It's sad though with regards to the job losses. SB

I guess if Brexit is only partly to blame then it's all fine really, isn't it? It's only contributing to fooking the country rather than 100% causing it.

If the problem in the first place is caused by Brexit, blaming the EU for not being able to bail them out is stupid.

Exactly, not down to the EU ETS scheme. But a number of factors including management mistakes and possibly Brexit. Business outside the UK also like certainty and will make decisions based on perception of what is the best thing to do. So if a company decides to change from UK to non-UK supplier, because of more certainty, then, yes that decision would have been as a result of the Brexit referendum, and subsequent incompetence of the elected government. Both of which are based on the will of the people.

How can our steel industry compete against the Chinese when they produced more steel in TWO months than Scunnie has in 149 years! That is fairly scary. It was acknowledged that Brexit was affecting future orders but in a graph shon last night they had been flatlining for a good few years.

In October 2016, the EU introduced anti-dumping tariffs on imported Chinese steel for a start. Of course UK producers can’t compete on quantity, but they can on innovation and quality.

Gazzer you don't think this has any effect? You would rather the government were able to bail it out when it got into trouble than that the government actually got its steel from there in the first place?

They can compete on quality, or they could until Brexit screwed them.
