My old 'indoor' drill's battery has packed up but the drill works fine and it seems daft to just throw it, but the batteries seem so expensive in relation to how cheap some replacement drills are.
I hate this throw-away system we seem to have so used to.

If it's only indoor diy use, screwfix do a corded drill for about £30.
Unless you're looking at genuine replacement batteries for your drill I wouldn't entertain it. |  | | |

Yep, I have another drill which I wouldn't dare use inside this place as it would rip chunks out of these crappy 'walls'.
The cordless I'm talking about is ideal for minor jobs indoors.

A lot of these cordless devices (drills, screwdrivers, etc) batteries contain a bunch of connected regular batteries (size C, quite often) so if you or someone you know is handy with a soldering iron you might be able to open it up and replace the individual batteries inside. If even one battery is dodgy it will affect the whole pack, so ideally you'd be able to test the ones in the drill, find the dodgy one (or two) and just replace that.
Hopefully the battery has screws on it because if you had to drill it open you'd be stuck in an infinite loop!

I recently bought a Makita drill with two batteries and a complete set of drill bits, cutters and drivers in a nice case - delivered and with a guarantee for about £60
There is sometimes a make offer button - just start lower than the advertised price and keep adding £1 until it accepts it.

Any modern charger worth its weight in cheap Chinese plastic should be able to handle a "full" battery by reducing the voltage to a trickle once it detects that charging is complete.
I do remember in the old days (25-30 years ago) chargers tended to warm up the batteries to a sometimes worrying degree, and while such chargers are still handy for charging a completely dead rechargeable battery (which can otherwise remain undetected by an "intelligent" charger) anything more recent should "know" when to cut off the charge completely (or reduce it to a trickle voltage as mentioned).
There are probably EU norms and regulations around all of this...so you might have Nigel F. to thank if your house burns down next year when all you were trying to do is hang some shelves...yikes! | | | |

I've taken the back off as you suggested and the thing all looks too neat and tidy and well- packaged for me to go charging [!] in there tearing it all apart!
I was intrigued to see what you mean about it just being a few regular batteries strapped together though. I suppose it isn't that fascinating but it had never occured to me what magic was hiding inside that unit before.

Nice for the money I must say - thanks for the pointer; handy site to know of.
Bit too similar to the one I already have; i.e. I've got a blokey type one for bigger jobs and just want a girly one for small bits indoors kinda thing.
I'm gonna have to ditch the old favourite and replace it I guess. | |
