Good article on conspiracism, the moon landing one in particular on 20:32 - May 28 with 3888 views | Marshalls_Mullet | Doesn't seem a very balanced article; "Conspiracy theories may seem strange and fringe, but they are not harmless. They often transmit racist, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic beliefs. In their most toxic form, these theories have led to violence, including mass shootings. Behind many conspiracy theories lurks a pervasive rage. Many researchers and communicators who deal with fringe conspiracy theories endure venomous and misogynistic threats and harassment." Slight bit of generalising there!! Video of Buzz Aldrin was good though.

But wait, these moon landing conspiracists are not harmless crackpots after all, according to the article: "Conspiracy theories may seem strange and fringe, but they are not harmless. It's difficult to read such articles with a straight face when they spout twaddle like that. Thanks for posting. [Post edited 28 May 2019 22:17]

They do literally go on to explain why some of these conspiracies have very real world consequences, far from harmless ones.

I'd say that's pretty much accurate. Fraudulent conspiracy theory works going back to Malleus Maleficarum and The Protocols Of The Elders of Zion are precisely as described in that article.

Agreed. I doubt many elite scientists worry too much about the conspiracy theories. The author of the article seemed strangely angry. In fact, I'm sure he posts on TWTD ;-)

Not really. Yes, the anti-vax issue. But nothing to back up most of the claims. It basically uses a conspiracy theory to debunk conspiracy theories. ;-)

There have been moon landing sceptics among supporters of Pol Pot, Hitler, Ivan the Terrible, Attila the Hun and Chairman Mao. There are also climate change deniers, paedophiles, antiwar supporters, socialists, yellow bellied liberals, Christians, homophobes, Brexiteers, Yellow Vests, pot smokers, republicans, unemployed, kitten thieves and cannibals who also don't believe in the moon landing.

So if you ignore anti-vax issue, and ignore things like climate change being a hoax by whichever their chosen target is, how can you say they don't have real life consequences? I'm not talking about "silly" things like the moon landing which, as they go into in that article, just happen to be almost a gateway to other ones. I'm talking about some of the more insidious ones too. Hell even examples from history show they can have a tremendous amount of power and influence when spread by charismatic people.

My point was not to generalise. That paragraph wasn't needed. The author should have kept to specific examples, which he could easily have done. He focused majorly on the moon landings, and then went on to talk about islamaphobia etc.

Perhaps it does Dan, but when an article comes out with "Conspiracy theories may seem strange and fringe, but they are not harmless. They often transmit racist, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic beliefs. In their most toxic form, these theories have led to violence, including mass shootings", people not brandishing pitchforks tend to stop reading. By the way, both Hitler and Stalin loved apples, but you won't find that fact on the internet. #Telling [Post edited 28 May 2019 20:53]

So because there is one paragraph in there you disagree with, the entire article and the other points it makes are wrong? That seems silly. There was literally one mention of Islamophobia, alongside the more obvious example of anti-semitism. The anti-semitism example had it's own linked article about the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, where 11 people died. That man was at least somewhat influenced by a conspiracy theory that Jewish people were trying to bring "invaders" to their country, writing: HIAS likes to bring invaders that kill our people. I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I’m going in. So whilst I can understand you can disagree with one small part of the article, the rest of it is fairly well sourced.

I'm not 100% anti-vax, but I think some vaccinations are totally unnecessary. I don't accept that the debate about climate change is over. I don't think it's scientific to say the debate about anything concerning science is over. And I believe the Earth is round.

I think there's a difference between what you're saying and the flat out denial that people have about the things mentioned. So for anti-vax, that literally none of them work and that they are all poisonous and unnecessary, despite a returning rise in some of the diseases it prevented and previous historical eradication of diseases such as polio or smallpox. For climate change, whilst I think the science currently is pretty clear about what the current causes are, and generally of what will happen at our current rate, the speed at which it's happening and how to best combat it are up for debate. But you're right, the science is never "over". But that does not mean you can just ignore what we currently understand as "right" because it might later turn out to be wrong. So for climate change in particular, we have absolutely no other explanation as to what is driving the current climate change that we are currently seeing, in particular the warming effect. But I digress. I get that both you and Marshalls_Mullet disagree with what they've said in that one part of the article and I get that, but I think it's unreasonable to dismiss the whole article based on one part that you think is wrong. EDIT: I'll be going offline now so if I do reply it'll probably be tomorrow evening. [Post edited 28 May 2019 21:04]

Don't get carried away. I just think the article would have been a lot better without that generalist paragraph. If you could point out where I said "all the other points it makes are wrong" .... That would be helpful.

"we have absolutely no other explanation as to what is driving the current climate change that we are currently seeing, in particular the warming effect. " A bit more reading around the subject might tell you that alternative explanations for the current situation have been suggested. I'm sure you know of some of them - perhaps you accept that they have categorically been proven wrong or "debunked". "I get that both you and Marshalls_Mullet disagree with what they've said in that one part of the article and I get that, but I think it's unreasonable to dismiss the whole article based on one part that you think is wrong." And I get that. But the part flagged up my MarshallsMullet and me is an absolute car crash of a paragraph. It's not the sort of thing a level headed journalist with any integrity writes.

I think anyone who has spent a lot of time looking into the subject and has strong doubts as a result has a stronger case for their views than someone who hasn't looked into the moon landings but accepts them as authentic anyway. I hold this belief for all historical "givens" across all cultures.
