I haven't heard about this, but those kinds of bought titles are usually just things like "Lord of the Manor of [insert name of village]". They are nothing to do with the actual peerage, just notional left-overs from the feudal era. Altho they once were a genuine measure of wealth and status, conferring rents and carrying duties such as turning out for one's overlord in wartime, those have generally been entirely stripped away since the Tudor era (or even before). It is nowadays pretty much a meaningless certificate to hang on your wall. Indeed, one wonders sometimes about the ownership chain and whether that has any historical validity.
