Seeing a bit of the world ideas. 10:25 - Jun 16 with 7018 viewsBanksterDebtSlave

Junios Slave is 2 years away from GCSE's followed by a long empty Summer which may well be the last chance for some quality family time together. (and the first opportunity time wise) Where would people suggest going as a family for about 4 weeks of travels to really see something of the world rather than only beaches. At the moment she still seems to like us so this is all assuming that is still the case then!

How about interrailing round europe? Bit vague I know but train fares are cheap and you could pack loads into four weeks.

We need a budget my friend, otherwise it's tricky. Can PM if you prefer.

If you want a memorable holiday you should either include historic things (Angkor, Tikal etc) or natural things (Borneo rainforest or suchlike).

The memories will stay forever.

Cross-US road trip? Couple of mates of mine did that a few years ago. Took a few weeks going West-To-East Coast and down the East coast a bit.

I've done that and I don't recommend it, you have an interesting start, and interesting end, but the middle is just inconvenience and wall enthusiasts

This is all helping....I think I want to broaden her world view (so less Western) but with some spectacular nature thrown in.

I was going to suggest interrailing too. Daughter set off less than a week ago for a month and has already done Amsterdam, Berlin, Kracow and is moving on to Vienna later today. Any further afield and you will be limiting yourself in comparison

Haven't been stateside in ages actually.

Thinking of visiting my mate in San Fran and working my way up to another friend's place in Whistler. Might need to save a bit first (and quit work!).

Asia is a hot ticket. Travel to japan is pretty reasonable considering the length of flight, but the real cost is when you get there. Sleeper train to travel to the distant prefectures can consolidate the costs of travel and accommodation considerably, and there is culture and fine food around every corner

You can do pretty much anything for that budget within reason if you are sensible.

How about:

- Hong Kong
- Cambodia (Angkor)
- Bangkok
- Chiang Mai
- Any beach, even an island in that budget
- Singapore

Otherwise Central America is brilliant:

- Lake Atitlán
- Antigua
- Tikal
- Belize Rainforest (or head to Costa Rica)
- Beach to finish if desired

I also love Peru. It's a fabulous country with enough to keep you going for a month;

- Lima
- Amazon in the north
- Andes around Cusco and the Inca Trail
- Lake Titicaca
- Nasca

Plenty of places - do you have a rough idea of something you'd like to do? Thinking about it Peru really is fabulous for a single country destination.

I have always wanted to visit central America (and/or south)...so Cuba/Costa Rica (+ another?) versus far East seems the likely decision but open to being diverted! Also realisticly travel would be in July, August so climate considerations apply I guess.

Georgia is a fantastic, fascinating country with great wilderness areas, loads of history where you won't come across the typical traveller types. If interested I can give more suggestions / ideas.

Booking Georgia in a few weeks (SB is interested too) but what's the the best way to get there? Not many direct flights...

P.S. We're not going together, just to clarify.

Belize is excellent although I wouldn't say it's more than a week or so. The west is lovely rainforest and some ruins (not on the scale of Tikal over the border though) and the east beaches are on the second largest reef system in the world.

If you like snorkelling then it's great although only the hotels at the north of the islands have swim access to the reef - the ones further south you need to get a boat to the reef.

Happy to help with suggestions for Guatemala and Belize.

As Footers said - seems tricky to get a direct flight on any "acceptable" airline.

How did you get there?

By bus across Turkey from Istanbul. You can fly from Istanbul to Tbilisi as well though - I took the bus because I was working near Batumi, near to the Turkish border.
