Coming to a field near you soon! The horse-fly.

"Although adult flies normally feed on nectar and sometimes pollen, female flies require a blood meal before they are able to reproduce effectively and to aid in their egg development. Unlike insects which surreptitiously puncture the skin with needle-like organs, female horseflies have specially adapted mouthparts which they use to rip and/or slice flesh apart. This causes the blood to seep out as the horsefly licks it up."

I've always liked horseflys. Now you've gone and spoilt it with that last sentence.

Master Footers I think you are concentrating too much on the pictures however an examination of metadata does suggest more interest in insectish insects (and beetles). So here is another one for you.....

Haven’t seen many at all this year....last year was horrific, I was pulling them off my arm drawing blood as they were removed and promptly despatched.

They are indeed the incarnation of pure evil and once they've sniffed you don't give up until death, blood or both !
