Even Marriott admitted that he had to leave. He came back fat and unfit for preseason. To me - that is enough to get sacked in football.

I'm aware. Still irks me though, though Clarke and Webster more so because I don't think we really had to sell them. We could have had both I would have thought if we paid more up front for Webster. | |

Clarke was behind Webster at the time, he wasn’t going to get a game here, so he wouldn’t have developed the way he did at Pompey, where he got gametime, similarly Webster needed to play at a higher level to develop - both did so the deal was a good one all round. Selling Webster, well that was another story.... |  | | |

Actually, this is a very good analysis. If we cannot score goals it puts pressure on the defence not to concede and that can make them jittery, nervous and anxious. Knowing that a rick will not mean losing because the forwards can be relied upon to knock a few in will make a big difference. Back in the early Robson days, our defence improved once we started scoring more (early 72 I think) with no significant change in personnel. |  |

Don't be silly. Pompey wanted Clarke as part of the deal and that gave us leverage to get ahead of the pack to sign Webster, who we needed more at the time. The nominal £50k valuation is to our benefit, it means virtually all of any sale Pompey make will be profit and means a bigger sell on for us. | |
