Genuine or cobblers? 17:29 - Jun 19 with 1950 viewsGeoffSentence

I was talking to the farmer from just behind my house today. He's a clever man who is involved in a lot of stuff and knows a lot of stuff, but he did stretch my credulity with a claim about the overhead powerline work that is going on from Bawdsey to Bramford.

His claim was that there is someone employed on the project whose entire job is to drive up and down the length of line checking if workers are smoking in their cabs.

I challenged him, but he was insistent.

What do we reckon? Likely or not?

Not likely. Fairly possible that that responsibility comes under some HSE role but it won't be the entire amount of that person's job.

I'll reply properly in a minute. Not supposed to use my mobile while driving the work van.

He is a bit of 'elf 'n' safety gorn mad' merchant. I should have pressed him harder, but I guess I had a Rory Stewart BBC debate kind of debacle.

UK Power Networks/EDF learnt the hard way to take Health and Safety seriously.

The chap's job will be to continuously scan areas being worked on for danger.

(There are also two or three incidences of employees dying in the last few years).

We are massive in to H&S and on big projects there will be watchers and reps there to oversee everything and make sure everyone is working safely.

As someone who worked on the project I have never been aware of anyone specifically employed for that. SPR (Scottish Power Renewables) had various site management sections, one of which was safety. But they had an overall brief rather than specific jobs, so it involved site speed checks, site safety inspections, correct use of access points etc.
......and yes it is all underground right up to the Bramford sub station.

Even when you feel down always remember its just a game.

A guy I know used to be flown up and down power lines in a helicopter for one of the big power companies checking the cables. What a job.

Maybe he was the fecker who hovered a few feet above my head checking the power lines that go through my garden a few years ago. I was enjoying a garden based conference call.

Ask him if he recalls an animated chap, with a phone in one hand, hopping up and down and waving his fist at him.

It is a Scottish power project, UKPN will have some diversion work involvement, the cable is either transmitted at 275kv or 440kv UKPN do not have the capacity to engineer anything above 132kv.
There are a team of SHEQ managers whose job involves site visits to ensure all areas are SHEQ compliant, part of this WILL be to ensure a total drink, drugs and no smoking site.
