On big money at Everton. Even with us paying a percentage and minimal loan fee, Everton will pay a huge amount whereas they could get him off the books now.
If he’s on £20k a week as rumoured then he will be getting £1m from Everton to leave them on a free. If we paid say £5k a week towards that they lose £750k next year. We wouldn’t pay much for a loan fee. Certainly not £100k.
Or they release him now and save that £750k. He’s 26. He isn’t making it there. Why would they keep him. Even if he was great in League One they would get less for him selling. Him in January then they’d have paid him from now until then. |  |

Can't say I've heard of this other than when a club is negotiating to release a player to free up wages. In those cases it is because there is no other club interested and the player is willing to take on the risk of potentially not finding a deal good enough to make up the loss in wages. Often they also become a free agent so can sign outside a transfer window when the wages will go up. He also gains the fact he is being paid now rather than waiting to receive his wages monthly.
If we are willing to pay either Everton or Garbutt so many K per week, how do they gain paying him off the difference up front now except, perhaps, if there is some risk that we no longer pay the loan wages if he gets injured? If the latter is the case then I can see the logic of it. | |
