Mother has just been quoted £1,200 to have her 2x2m bathroom fitted out. That seems excessive, doesn't it? It's in Lowestoft for context, and she wants the new bath, sink etc plumbed in, about half the bathroom tiled and a new floor laid.

Over a grand for a two-day, one-man job is a bit much, innit? Or am I out of touch?

Guidance welcome, as are any recommendations...

It's not though is it?

It's just that people have come to expect to pay stupid money.

If all and sundry is being supplied and that is all labour for 2 days, it's a lot of money.

600 quid per day? Assuming the 2 days is correct.

I would get at least 3 quotes and take it from there.

This is our area of business.
If you are talking labour only, you may get a handy man type chap for that sort of money but doubt you'd get any plumbers taking it on.

Only my opinion, it’s far in excess of 2 days.

I must admit 2 days does sound optimistic.

To the cautious mind, and maybe to a contienscious tradesperson, a good job could be up to 3-4 you reckon?

So many variables.
If everything went amazingly well perhaps 5 or 6 days.
Day to strip out and make good walls.
Day to fit sanitary ware.
3-4 days to half tile a whole bathroom to a good standard with all trimming and grouting.
That’s to a standard our customers are willing to pay for!

3k for a small one 10 years ago. It was all through B & Q. Fitter did an excellent job, floor in particular. gave me his number, said to pass it on to anyone interested, cut out the B&Q tariff. About 3 years later he appeared in a newspaper on child porn related charges. Number was still in my phone. Deleted straight away. I've moved since. He did do a bloody good job on that bathroom though.

Seems expensive Footers.

Maybe you could do the soft strip for her.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

TIling wouldn't take that in such a small room, ultimately wouldn't really matter as would be on a meterage normally but agree it is going to end up being a weeks work, either 5 days or 4 longer days, and then probably another 1/2 day a few days later to tidy up any bits

I just paid 200 to have a bathroom sink taken out and replaced with a new one / made good. Took them a morning. London rates though. 1200 sounds well cheap for that to do list.

I don't think it's fair - people just want something for nothing and a skilled tradesman to work for £10-12 an hour.

It's not 2 days work, and I'd be very surprised if all materials are bought by the customer - the bathroom suite and tiles may be, but what about all the grout, sticky, backing board, trim for the tiling? All the mastic for when it's finished. The ply to re-deck the floor when the original flooring comes up and it's inevitably f*cked. The primer for the walls, the bonding/plaster to make good the walls, all the fixings and timber etc

£1,200 for a new bathroom isn't OTT, it's a lot fo work and skilled - you would be able to find an unskilled bloke who will turn his hand to it and bodge it for you and save money but is it worth it?

Once again, thanks for all the tips, peeps!

The reason I mentioned a two-day job is that this is what the bloke said he would do. It seems that's too short a time from the replies on this thread...

It seems as though he's not being unreasonable with this quote, from what I've read, but as you can probably tell, I am *extremely* inexperienced in these matters!

I've recently had to chase [another] 'tradesman' Joe who ripped off my elderly mum.

He charged her a significant sum with another separate slip with all the materials you list added on top.

On the strength of a single email he returned 350 quid, which still isn't enough but will have to do.

No one is suggesting £10 per hour on this thread or similar.

If the guy reckons it's a 2 day job and he wants 1200 pounds labour only then it's a con.

If materials are included that should be made clear and it is one of the things footers need to be reminding his mum.

Get quotes in writing and ensure it is understood exactly what those quotes involve/include.

Some plumbers will charge their time at £40-45 an hour, it can soon add up.

I think the £1,200 for 2 days is just wrong, there is too much work for that, too much stuff that needs to set to go off etc.

I spose the more skilled / experienced the tradesman, the quicker they can do the job.

I've just spent more or two weeks on my kitchen floor (new plywood base, with fcking cork tiles glued on top - horrible job and horrible contact adhesive stuff) plus a bit of cladding on a wall. Sure I proper bloke could have done this in 2 days.
