Huge Birthday wishes to Andy Nelson 09:01 - Jul 5 with 1203 viewsrfretwell

A true Town great, Cockney captain of our League Title winning team in '61-'62, Andy is 84 today. Made 214 appearances, never scored for us. Big, gritty centre half capable of taming the best centre forwards of the day - Derek "the Doog" Doogan etc. As an 8 year old that scene of Nelson holding the league trophy aloft on the Cornhill amid the blue and white multitudes lives with me to this day. He went on to manage Gillingham and Charlton before retiring to Alicante. Other memories anyone?

Happy birthday to him, one of only four of that team still with us.

Our only League title winning captain although Mick Mills should also have been one.

Not surprising he did not score for us because I doubt if he crossed the halfway line unless it was at the coin toss before the game.

I have loads of memories of that team and that season which I tend to mention on April 28th each year.

Out of interest, who are the others? Ray Crawford, of course, is one.

I fear that most fans that post on this board barely remember even as far back as Andy Lineghan.
Nelson was a superb and feared defender, not a player to tangle with.

Happy Birthday Andy Nelson!

….whatever their age would hold much memory of Andy Lineghan.

They may Remember David Linighan though, his correctly spelt younger brother.

Very smooth.

That’s how much of an impact he made on me.

Jonny Wark reckons that pound-for-pound DL was the most value for money signing that the club ever made (up to JW writing his autobiography, that is). I'm not sure I agree with him, but he must have had something about him.

If only DL could have laid off the sauce - he could have been even better!
