Who will get the England call up first 11:12 - Jul 8 with 1324 viewschicoazul

Mings, Clarke, or Webster?

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Mings.

If he has a decent first few months of the season, he could get a call-up this season.

It's a tough one. England are pretty well stocked with CBs at the moment, but I think you and the other boyos are right, it'll be Mings. Clarke faces a real battle to get ahead of Duffy Dunk and Webster hasnt moved to the PL yet.

We are? Maguire, Stones and Gomez look pretty set (although the latter has struggled to stay fit for any decent period of time) but beyond that the cupboard is fairly bare I’d say - Keane, Tarkowski and Dunk have been the most recent call-up’s but can’t say Southgate seems convinced by any of those

I rate Mings, but I'd be surprised by an England call up.

He's still a relative novice at Prem level.

And he has to get past;

Maguire
Stones
Lascelles
Gomez
Keane

As well as others who can slot in at CB;

Walker
Dier
Rice

And then it depends where the U21 CB's end up;

Tomori
Clarke Salter

Southgate loves to dip into the U21's to keep the open.

If they all start the season in the Pl then I would say Webster, if Webster doesn't get a move then Mings

Technically Lascelles is ahead of him at the moment, however given that Southgate hasn’t shown any inclination to call him up I’m not sure that’s much competition. If Mings plays regularly for Villa (probable) and continues to hit last seasons levels (more questionable but quite possible) he’ll be ahead of him for certain

Walker is only a CB option in a back 3, in which case we’d have at least 5 options there in the squad. Similarly whilst Dier and Rice can fill in there they won’t be selected in a squad specifically as a CB, so will also be 4 spots for specialists there

I can’t think of a single U21 centre back who has been called up in recent times that isn’t playing regular PL football, so unless they get a move Tomori and Clarke-Salter can be ignored

It’s basically a question of whether Mings can get ahead of Keane, or Tarkowski and Dunk to be the next cab off the rank in the event of an injury. Southgate’s squad selections suggest he isn’t convinced by any of them, so if Mings plays regularly and impresses he’ll almost certainly be looked at

Can't do any worse than John Stones.
