Precisely this. It's the same thinking that led Johnson and his supporters to claim that criticising him for his handling of the Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe merely deflects blame away from the Iranian government who are the real baddies. Just because you didn't light the fire it doesn't mean you're not responsible when someone's house gets torched because you decided to pour petrol on said fire. There's a troubling reticence to take any responsibility for anything amongst these politicians on the more extreme right of politics.

Boris is not really that relevant to the issue. Once it has been revealed what the ambassador thinks of Trump there is no way he can continue to his job. The blame lies 100% with the person who leaked the information.
