So Darroch has resigned then 12:34 - Jul 10 with 8453 viewsHerbivore

Didn't really have a lot of choice after Boris refused to back him for fear of upsetting Trump. Worrying times when our next PM is more interested in kowtowing to a dreadful US president than he is in standing up for British sovereignty.

Shameful.

Our politicians from all sides should have been backing him all the way. Hunt certainly did last night but Boris sold him down the river.

Just another example of Boris being in it for Boris. Mustn't upset the Trumpster.

It's pretty disgusting all round. The leak and the pro-Trump response to this has been shameful.

It's a troubling glimpse into our post-Brexit future. The same loons who bang on about sovereignty when it comes to the EU have been fully backing Trump meddling in UK business.

Darroch couldn't possibly stay once his emails had been leaked.
Feel sorry for him but he can't possibly stay as ambassador if he isn't going to be invited anywhere.

The bigger issue is who leaked the emails.
A disgruntled Civil Servant?
Russia?
USA?

Yep. Dismantling the institutions that stand for and underpin our laws, sovereignty and way of life is so Brexit. And yet its supporters are too blind to see it.

So much taking back control.

A politically motivated leak has achieved it's desired result, one more step toward politicising British institutions because the US model works so well.

No way he could do his job given the whole administration will now refuse to work with him. He's done the decent thing and stepped down, shame more of our politicians didn't have the guts to admit that there is no way he could do the job as ambassador in the circumstances he found himself and move him on, perhaps to a different country.
I'm not blaming Darroch here this is all the fault of whoever leaked the e mails but you can't be an ambassador in a country where none of the ruling administration will talk to you. Keeping him in post was just pointless and counter productive as we'd have effectively been without an ambassador to the US. Would have been cutting off our noses to spite our face.

it was only ever a question of when.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

What if the US decide they don't like the next ambassador or the one after that?

In fact, why don't we just let the US and every other country decide which ambassador they would like - perhaps one that is aligned to their views?

What a ridiculous comment. Its a very specific set of circumstances that has forced this unfortunate situation, its not as if Trump has just phoned us up and said 'sack that ambassador please'. To be fair he does have good reason to not want to work with him.
If somebody called you 'inept and incompetent' would you be happy to work with them the next day?

Yes, I'd want to prove them wrong. Trump's response has only served to show that Darroch was spot on.

Apart from the sad end to Darroch's career the big issue here is Trump and Johnson. Openly endorsed by the former it is clear that we are going to fall increasingly under US influence under the latter (last night proved it). We can only hope that the US election next year throws Trump overboard and he can be remembered as a political bad dream, while a rational, sane president replaces him. (Whatever you think of former US presidents they were all at least to some degree rational even if you didn't agree with them)

That specific set of circumstances being a complete stitch up. It's not the first time a foreign ambassador has criticised Trump - others have even done so publically - and it won't be the last. Trump may have only been a useful idiot in this anyway; it's highly predictable he'd throw his toys out of the pram in the face of criticism.

The situation is entirely fabricated to get a populist/Brexiteer-friendly new guy out there.

I'd take Bush Jr back personally, tbf Bush Junior himself isn't such a bad egg, but that man had so many talons in him from key supporters he was a political puppet through and through

It was his job to write honest reports for the bods back home - its presumably not his fault it was leaked.

Might as well just be honest - leave the EU and we're the 51st state / out of frying pan into the fire. Played once again Brexiteers - you really have done a fine job.

It's not really a ridiculous comment though, it's the logical conclusion of backing down. There is now nothing to stop any country restricting the access of our ambassador and thus forcing a change which might suit them better.

"If somebody called you 'inept and incompetent' would you be happy to work with them the next day?"

Depends if I was. Trump certainly is. Are you now saying that our ambassadors should lie in the report they send through just in case one becomes public?

Watch Donald Trump spin this into a victory for him and that no-one should cross him.

When the real story is an Ambassador in Sir Kim Darroch being truthful and retiring early and a President racking up over 10,000 lies and criminal activity still sitting upon a throne.

Darroch, who I’ve met a few times in DC, would happily take on Trump, but when Johnson doesn’t back him he has nowhere to go.

Sad.

Go Donald, he da man!
Darroch was clearly going to have to go..... regardless of the fact he should have stayed. Once he was the story and Trump was being Trump he was toast.

Boris a massive hypocrite after what he said about Trump - no doubt the video of him saying it will be dismissed as fake news.

It's a massive worry for our diplomats though, they now can't do their job properly for fear of upsetting someone

We have to regularly bite our tongue in public, but as others have pointed out Darroch was doing his job and doing it well.

Whoever leaked this, should be charged with a breach of the Official Secrets Acf.

Anyone but Trump, this wouldn’t have ended up how it has.
