A few words of wisdom appreciated on emigrating/moving abroad would be appreciated by fellow TWTDers please.
I'm in my mid-20s and wife is 30 and we moved from South to North earlier in the year. Things haven't quite worked out and we can't get settled so we've thought about moving abroad to the US/Canada/Aus/NZ. The US would be our preference as we've been there before and it suits our lifestyle. I'm a Town Planner and she works in facilities. What are the chances for us and where should we start looking?

From personal experience, avoid the US. Its one of these places that makes a good holiday, but you'll soon be pining for home. If you can afford it, based on a number of my friends from high-school, do Australia or NZ. There is enough there to sate the itch of back home, as well as a really rich and interesting culture to integrate in to. |  |

I'm not sure on the specific but I think Australia requires long termers to have a certain amount of money in the bank. US can be easier to set up shop, but there is a definite live to work culture there rather than work to live.
I'd recommend searching for some aussie Expats forums or some such to get the best info, as I'm not fully experienced with Aus personally, only America and Canada [Post edited 12 Jul 2019 11:12]

Having worked in the immigration game a while ago, I can recommend Canada as the easiest of those options. It's a very pro-immigrant country so you'll be welcomed with open arms. That and the list of jobs they're looking for is usually very broad, with some surprising careers listed.
The process is also a lot easier than the other countries you've mentioned. And it's like America, only civilised. |  |

Yeh, the work-life balance in the states isn't great. Although I suppose it depends what you do for work. For the average Joe though it's not something I'd be happy with.
And yes, the restrictions have become even stricter in recent years. No matter where you go you'll likely need quite a cash sum to satisfy the criteria. | |

Moved to Oz 3 years ago, love it out here. You would need to look at points based visa and see if skills are recognised to get a perm res visa if you are looking long term.
You can do this on Gov website.
Great lifestyle, affordable as although things are more expensive wages are much better. Houses are better £ for £ as you get more space in my experience. Long process and need a decent bit of savings for moving as the set up costs are expensive. Great experience though and I would do it all again. | | | |

We paid out for 189 visas before we found jobs which cost about £6k initially. Took £15k with us and my partners job offered $10k relocation which for a family of three worked out ok. If you are getting sponsored by a job with relocation assistance then take it I say !! More help the better

To be fair it took me the better part of one month's wages to move from. Ipswich to Sax (carpeting and decorating a new build home included in that cost) having a base set up or friends/family/work to provide temporary board is a huge help when moving abroad, but it certainly isn't something I would ever recommend doing 'on the cheap', and always make sure you have emergency funds. When I went to the USA I made sure I had enough money for a return trip in reserve the entire time I was there. [Post edited 12 Jul 2019 12:02]

I've thought about it, but never got particularly close.
I think main issue for me is that most players where I could move to (i.e. English speaking) seem to be a real work to live mentality, or are just too far away. It may have just been because I had a bad flight experience, but anything more than 1 flight is just too far if anything were to happen and I need to get home.
I've also not got a job that is particularly specialised or transferable which doesn't help - if I were to move now I'd go to somewhere like Cyprus for a few years as a nicer pace of life. |  |

Well I am about to emigrate to Suffolk from Ireland in a few weeks time, this is certainly the place for tips I imagine! I think moving depends on so many things. If you have children and a house to sell for example that can complicate things too. Biggest problem for us is finding a house to rent we still don't have one yet. If another person asks us what our moving date is I will scream.
Having moved about ourselves, it is important you work out what your life priority is. What are you goals? Are your priorities salary, career progression, family, hobbies? | | | |

Genuinely, you need to really think about 'why' you want to move abroad.
Be very honest with yourselves about what you want/ need from a move - what you will miss from the UK and what you maybe even be prepared to give up to move.
I'll be honest, if you you struggle to cope with moving within the UK then you may really struggle to move outside.

Good luck with it all, having moved from Suffolk I do miss it, particularly on a nice day but it does lack the excitement I crave.
I think career progression is always good, a job where you are actually contributing to something that will make a difference whether that be charity or re-development of a big project is always good. I think this is key for me, as well as a good life-balance, not necessarily flexible or part-time working but to be earning enough to actually be able to afford to do things instead of literally just working to pay bills with little disposable. | |

I worked in the USA for 5 years and loved it - but you'll struggle to emigrate there under the current 'America first' jingoistic crackdown. Brits are I believe the second highest illegal immigrants after Canadians. I based myself in North Carolina which is a fabulous place to live if you like the outdoors lifestyle and don't mind the occasional hurricane. Canada is as dull as dishwater to live in and Aus is a tad hot in most areas but my brother lives in Tasmania which is wonderful. NZ is best avoided. Have you considered going to a more advanced and tolerant country than the UK a little closer to home? Scandanavia or France for example - all the benefits of being in the 21st century without being on the other side of the world. | |

My sister lives in Vancouver - its a great place to visit but like New Zealand is fast becoming a Chinese state and the costs are eye-watering and it rains more than the amazon. Anywhere east of the rockies is bitingly cold for half the year, hot and humid in summer and a long way from anywhere - plus the food is dreadful. But they have plenty of space for newcomers that's for sure. Thought about Alaska? | |
