Guthers and other TWTD weapons gurus - Turkey's S-400s, worrying? on 13:36 - Jul 12 with 1449 views | StokieBlue | It's a very capable system. Don't see how Turkey can remain a member of NATO whilst using incompatible hardware bought from the people NATO was designed to counter. SB

Guthers and other TWTD weapons gurus - Turkey's S-400s, worrying? on 13:36 - Jul 12 with 1448 views | Steve_M | Erdogan is upsetting the US by buying Russian missiles and thus losing out on the F35 as the US, rightly, do not want it to be compromised and at the same time sending drilling rigs off Cyrprus creating another major incident. One might suggest that power has gone to his head a bit or that h's getting a bit desperate now he's locked up most journalists and academics in the country. This won't break up NATO though, Turkey might be forced out but otherwise the risk there is Trump doing Putin's bidding and collapsing it.

Guthers and other TWTD weapons gurus - Turkey's S-400s, worrying? on 13:37 - Jul 12 with 1444 views | WD19 | The key question is "Will Trump tear up an order for 100 x F-35 planes?" I am guessing the answer will be no. Turkey will probably be written out of the support part of the F-35 arrangement and the world will .....eventually.....carry on. With Trump claiming the credit for whatever it is that is creditable.

Well, your last point was my other worry. The threats by Trump to try and make Europe 'pay its way' earlier in the year (?) were clearly bluster but in the new political climate it seems bluster sometimes turns to reality. Another concern if that, if Turkey does withdraw or take a lesser role in NATO, what pressures will that put upon British bases in Cyprus for extra support to any forces further East?

The Americans are quite concerned about Ankara's military closeness with Moscow, specifically the risk of sensitive US tech ending up in the wrong hands. NATO is under significant strain with Trump's financial demands, recent unpopular interventions and a degree of Euro-centricism. Turkey's main use was its position on the southern flank of the USSR, putting that country within range of early generations of American intermediate-range missiles. Nowadays its usefulness as a base in the Middle East is compromised by rivalry with US allies Israel and Saudi Arabia, plus its own regional ambitions.

There is NO way that the US will let Turkey anywhere near F35! Russia would be all over Turkey wanting to know how S-400s performed against F35 and the techs helping out on the missile system would just ask for a glimpse of the plane 😉😉 | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Interesting, thanks for that. 'Turkey made more than 900 parts for the F-35, that work will be picked up by American suppliers at first, but will open to other nations in the months ahead.' Either Beko start supplying a lot more washing machines or Russia extends a hand to Turkey and there is more military equipment made there (and the unravel continues).

I took delivery of a new Beko fridge last week. Lovely little unit, but had no idea it was Turkish. If the situation escalates, will I need to unplug it?
