Apollo 11 moon landing tapes up for auction at Sotherbys:

These types of things are always sold, really there should be some foresight and they should be sent to a museum. I assume Musk or Bezos will buy them given their private space companies and interest in the subject.

High-grade magnetic tape was expensive stuff. Same as why the BBC wiped so many of their archives to re-use the tapes.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

In the grand scheme of the 80+ billion USD Apollo program they are pittance though.

It's usually just a lack of foresight - so much stuff which belongs in museums is sold on only to be bought back and placed in museums at a much higher cost later on.

Someone was probably allowed to take the tapes home as no longer needed, then sold them on. May not even have known what they contained (a lot of other data was generated during the Apollo programme), or realised its significance.

People don't always think in terms of history and museums, especially for something like a recording which required specialist kit to even play.

Not really those first attempts with Burt Lancaster in the lead role didn't work, pointless keeping them.
