Think it's still the ticket system. Just go to a machine and buy a handful of tiny tickets- can't remember the denominations.

In my experience, whatever ticket you buy, whether via machine or ticket desk, won’t work and will be the wrong one. Just do as the locals do on the Metro and force the barrier. Not washing for a week is optional, but worth considering if you really want to blend in.
