Things to dislike about the older football fan 19:20 - Jul 29 with 5483 viewsMattinLondon

Banging on about how ‘players could tackle’ back in the day when in reality it meant that a bunch of donkeys could kick the more skilful players and basically get away with it. Yeah, that’s a good idea.

Harping back to each stadium having character when actually they were little better than massive urinals and were places where families didn’t go due to the hooligans acting like p***ks.

Some now complain about pitches being too perfect because back in the day Professional football pitches were little better than muddy park fields without the dog mess.

You could abuse players back then because they weren’t overpaid prims donnas and could take it without admitting that Black players were routinely the target of racist idiots who thought that vile abuse was part of the game - or just banter.

England were awful and played long ball rubbish and failed to qualify in a couple World Cups but now it’s the fault of the foreigners if England don’t progress to at least the quarter finals.

Ipswich were great - I cant disagree.

Ok, some of the above is massively over-the-top and is basically me being a k nob but I get annoyed when someone posts about modern football being awful whilst romantically casting back the years. A lot of things today in football is far far better.

I think the point is you cannot compare different times. For example the old leather balls used in 50's/60s were very heavy and got heavier when wet so I honestly dont believe Ronaldo could do one of his free kicks with one of those balls.

However footballers are a lot fitter now and footballers from 50/60s wouldn't keep up with them.

But I will argue footballers now roll around as if they've been shot much more than they ever did.

I agree with the rolling around and I’m not defending it - but what’s the difference between a defender deliberately taking out a striker and a striker diving in the area. Both is cheating.

Did you know, Ipwich didn't have a single player sent off between April 1950 and December 1968.

Ah those were the days, it's all softies these now.

I think he was talking more about the play acting, which is pathetic rather than cheating.

Todays footballers may be fitter, but the science of diet, looking after yourself and medical science have moved so quick. If the footballers of the bygone era had that knowledge they would be just as good if not better than most of todays players.
Think how good Best, Pele, Charlton, Moore would be.

They were much better than the namby pamby helium balloons they use nowadays. Kick one hard enough into a man's solar plexus and you could kill him.

Apart from your ageist, racist rant you seem to overlook the fact that some (quite a few of us) back in the day actually enjoyed the fact that football was merely an excuse for carrying a Stanley and having a decent ruck and smashing up pubs and railway carriages, not to mention sending the local constabulary home with sore heads and bloodied noses together with the fans they were supposed to be protecting. Families weren't invented so no-one cared about causing offence through rustic chants, learned in school playgrounds and refined in pubs and clubs. That's what some of us miss most in the commercialised, politically correct environment in which football now exists.
