Easy for me to say, and it must be a horrible situation, but they are risking their own lives and those of the people who will be required to try and save them.

The selfishness of these 31 people, has also ended in 1500 people not being allowed to go back today and get pets, valuables etc as promised as the Police are worried a large number will refuse to leave

That's shocking re pets - cats can probably fend for themselves if they have catflaps, but dogs & any caged animals? Massive welfare issues there.

Shouldn't they be forcibly removed? It's a mandatory evacuation for the safety of everyone. You have the right to put your life at risk but not others and that is what they are doing as the emergency services would be bound to try and rescue them in the event of collapse. I do understand that forcibly removing them opens up all types of other questions though so it's tricky. SB [Post edited 5 Aug 2019 7:49]

We should be fine as high up but village would potentially get cut off. A lot of the bridges are old and might not survive a large surge. Loads of roads closed in case the worst happens so we are all having to use little back roads. The train line is also shut for the same reason. So I'm having to drive to work. Lots of extra police/ fire and army around. Quite a surely experience. This 32 are idiots for various reasons. However what has bee great to see Is the support of crews from around the country turning up to help and the local communities help each other. Shops donating supplies / restaurants and take aways delivering bonkers amounts of gun to the emergency services and locals offering beds / child minding / looking after animals etc So far the expected rain hasn't materialised, fingers crossed it doesn't.

I spend a lot of time in the Peak District and am very familiar with the area around Buxworth, Whaley Bridge and New Mills. A lovely part of the country and very friendly people. All being well I shall be up that way again on Thursday, I hope all goes well for yourself and the local communities.

You're at the beginning of a very slippery slope there. If it were me in that horrendous situation I would get my wife dog and kids out with our paperwork etc but stay in the house myself.

I agree, hence I said it was a tricky situation. If the emergency services just left them to their fate then obviously they can do what they like but they won't do that so they are putting others in potential danger. Out of interest, why would you stay in the house? SB

I'd be worried about burglars going for mine and my neighbour's houses, and i'd be worried about the other people (if there were any) staying behind,

If you are up this way this week, just watch out. All the roads into New Mills are shut, as well as loads in the surrounding area. It's a pain in the ass.

I'd leave them to it too. Bloody idiots - if they're in the potential flood path, they've no idea what they'd be in for if it did break. Things are looking much better now though - hopefully the reservoir level is down enough to no longer be a risk.

Surely pet evacuation could be allowed/organised by other means, whether owners going in supervised by police, or vet nurses, RSPCA officers etc who'd have no vested interest in staying, being allowed in to rescue the animals? If my dog were left alone in my house in that situation, I'd be trying illicit & possibly dangerous methods of trying to rescue him (eg sneaking round back roads or open country in the dark) rather than let him die a slow & painful death from dehydration. Better to allow people to do it in a safer way.

Trouble is, if it does burst there would be no time to respond/escape. So it comes down to whether the life of the emergency service people helping a property/pet recovery is worth more or less than a pooch. As hard as it may be to hear it in those terms. Hypothetical now thankfully, as the reservoir is well below a level that they’d be worried about.

I'd go in myself on my tod then, and leave messages not to rescue me if the dam broke - I wouldn't be able to live with myself, leaving my dog in that situation. Glad it's now hypothetical anyway!

Agree. Nothing other than locking me up would stop me from getting to my dog[s]. I wouldn't want anyone else risking themselves but I'd be damned if I'd consider leaving them to their fate.

Yes, My in Laws live In Chinley (next village to Chapel), we go there quite often as there is a cracking Chinese there. I also go climbing around there quite a bit. Buxton just seems to have its own mico-climate. WE can all be warm and sunny and our friends there can be snowed in.

There is a specialist pet/animal rescue team, that have been there since Saturday (maybe Friday). If people couldnt get their animals they let them know, and they went in collected them and brought them out. Lots of people locally have been offering up space for animals, from people with fields offering free stabling for horses, to people offering free rabbit housing. Been great to seen on social media.

I'm not sure how 31 people refusing to leave affect 1500 people not being allowed to go back to rescue their pets.
