Attendance Saturday 04:57 - Aug 8 with 3322 views | The_Romford_Blue | I see Sunderland have been given extra tickets (E Block) so now have half the upper Cobbold. With them having somewhere around 2,700 (that number sounds familiar when it’s half the upper cobbold), I’d be stunned if the total attendance is less than 20k. I’ll go for 21,400 which would be bloody decent. Up the Town

Unfortunately in these days of big wages and even bigger transfer fees, and of fans demanding more and more, 3 points isn't all that matters. To remain competitive and to get more of those 3 points in the future we need cold hard cash. Over the last few years as our attendances have crept down, our matchday income and commercial income has gone down with it. It is that as much as anything which means that we have been in the same financial pond as Burton and Rotherham rather than swimming around with Derby and Bristol City. So bring on the three points, but bring on big crowds too please. A packed stadium is also a more thrilling place to be.

Here's the thing Geoff.....the reality of football is this. We can spend and invest in the squad but if that doesn't equate to winning, no one is going to show up at PR. The reality is, as we all knew before Evan's piece yesterday, we won't be spending big and making major investment so PL has to work with pretty much what he has. Here's the thing - if PL gets us playing and winning (doesn't really matter how we win) then people will come back to PR and we'll see an uplift in revenue and income. This isn't a chicken and egg situation - we don't have cash to spend but tat doesn't mean that PL can't get us to win matches - if we build on Burton and consolidate with a win against Sunderland, we start to put last season behind us, we build momentum, build confidence which means we increase our chances of winning. If we can get on a run - you'll see people attending matches. Merely spending big does't equate to more people attending.

More cash definitely does not guarantee success, otherwise we wouldn't be playing parachute payment rich Sunderland this season, but it does give you a better chance. And of course, more people attending does mean more cash coming in to the club. We then rely on good governance to turn that into a more successful team, which is the other part of the equation that we have been missing.

Apparently they’d sold out before they were given the extra tickets which only came on sale in the last couple of days.

Marquee players do help to bring people in though although you are right that wins = attendance but having a star to draw people in is always healthy. Bullard was the last example here, we know it didn't work out but he drew people in and sold shirts in a way a Town player hadn't done so in years. Even those cack wigs were sold. A lot of fun has been poked at Derby for that Rooney signing - but thats a name every kid's going to get on their shirts and the neutrals will turn up and watch as he's bigger than that club in this day (which is sad but true). He could also prove to be a Sheringham factor in that league, because without him playing for West Ham we'd have been promoted in 2005 and they'd have missed out on the Playoffs altogether - had we signed Sheringham then we'd have gone up as champions given we weren't far off even with injuries - so it's a good investment if done correctly. Not saying we should be in for him or someone like that given our constraints but if an experienced pro in his 30's with some name value was available and a deal could be worked out, it's sometimes worth a punt even if they do sometimes turn out to be Lee Chapman but you can't discount the draw factor of a name when it comes to attendance either.

So true - along with experience Rooney is definitely coming in because of these dips that Derby have had in the second half of the season. What a galvanising signing that will be in January

I would like to wish you the best of luck against Sunderland on Saturday and I have you down for a 2-1 win over them. I am from Ipswich and was born here and I became a Newcastle fan thanks to the Keegan era and the entertainers but I have a soft spot for Town and went to a lot of games over the last few years with friends and it pained me to see you relegated last season. I hope that come to the end of 2019/2020 you are back in the Championship for 2020/2021. I have to say I am surprised that we have Carroll back. Hopefully, it could enable Elias Sorensen to come to you on loan. He is a very good young striker if you are still allowed to bring in players.
