Interesting piece on why potentially unhinged Remainers are the real problem 22:37 - Sep 4 with 7467 viewsBluedandy

... appears to imply, possibly rightly, that parliament derives its sovereignty from the people and therefore does not possess a divine right to defy the biggest democratic mandate in British political history.

Recent shenanigans are not really about blocking no deal, it's all about blocking Brexit and parliamentarians are hoping millions of working-class people are just too stupid to work it out.

There is no historical evidence to support the notion that parliamentary sovereignty in England (or indeed Britain) derives from the people. Over several hundred years the balance of power between the monarch, the Lords and the Commons has moved in favour of the Commons because politicians in the Commons have made it thus.

"biggest democratic mandate in British political history"

That's one way of looking at it.

Another way of looking at it is that it was a 52% to 48% split, which is far too narrow to authorise such a seismic constitutional upheaval as brexit. With a split that narrow, the outcome was only ever going to be the protracted and bitter wrangling that we find ourselves embroiled in.

Particularly when you factor in the illegal activities of the Leave campaign.

I think millions of working-class people are now tuning into the fact that they've been misled by a bunch of multimillionaire gangsters who literally detest them.

If we are talking about referendums, the 1975 one on staying in the EEC had a larger mandate.

Also - am I correct in thinking that the bill that passed last night and that could go through Monday could simply be repelled by a new incoming government.

In short, should Boris win the election with a majority, he can simply remove it.

I know that the liklihood of the Tories winning and winning with the majority is slim to none but.....well.....Trump, Corbyn etc etc

He could, but Labour have now shifted their position to wait until Boris comes back from the EU with or more likely without a deal and the extension then has to be triggered. That will ruin him.

Doesn't he have the option to call an election with a simple majority though - which is an option I'm sure he's exploring.

"No 10 could introduce a simple vote where they would only need a majority of one, or in a more extreme circumstance, hold a vote of no-confidence in itself, that Labour might find hard to stand against."

He does, but he won't get one if Labour and the other opposition parties stay united. Fewer than 300 MPs voted for a GE last night.

Good luck arguing that with Wee Jimmy Krankie when the Scots inevitably vote for independence on a similar split.

The problem Boris faces isn't that he would be voted down but that the bill would be ammended and the GE would be later than he wants.

You're right. People for who this wasn't an issue, didn't spend years priming the looney press to print scores of lies about the EU and demonising immigrants, who didn't openly spread these falsehoods through their privileged access to the media and the population, who didn't court dark money to fund a campaign that would have been illegal had the referendum been binding, who then supported a bill that would have taken us out of the EU last March, and who have tried to ensure the fundamental principle of British parliamentary sovereignty isn't subverted are definitely the problem.

True enough - both sides were slapped with fines around spending returns. Look at the details though and you're comparing chalk with cheese, with regards to nature of the misdemeanors, where the donations were coming from and level of criminal activity.

There should be no excuse for any misdemeanors, on either side, but tit's obviuously quite stacked in scale and seriousness on the Leave side - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unlawful_campaigning_in_the_2016_EU_referendum

In English Law all Sovereignty derives from the Monarch.

Anyone here own their own house?

No you don't, you own the Freehold to enjoy it, subject to the pleasure of the Monarch.

Anyone here consider themselves free?

Well, you may be, until such time as you are detained at Her Majesty's Pleasure.

Anyone here found an Anglo-Saxon hoard?

Sorry, you don't own it, but Her Majesty may grant you a partial finders fee through one of her Coroners.

etc
