That Johnson plan to scoop up Labour leavers 11:32 - Sep 12 with 575 viewsSteve_M

Might have some flaws:

It's worth clicking through to the entire thread by the way.

Edit: to add that that is 2017 Labour voters so some of the Brexit fall-out had taken place by then.

Listening to a Labour MP for SUnderland this morning on a podcast and they said that most of their constituents who are ardent Brexiteers didn't vote Labour in 2016, or 2017

That the image of working class Labour voters leaving them over Brexit is massively overplayed in her view as they just aren't current Labour voters doing so, they may have been in the past.

Also, that the picture of Rees-Mogg slumped over in the COmmons, and the fact that Jo Johnson resigned will be massive with regards to the view that Labour will push - that they aren't representative of you, and more importantly that you can't trust a Tory, even their own brother can't.

Apparently Ed Milliband 'stabbing his brother in the back' was seen as a massive deal in these sort of constituencies, family values maybe?

But you're also missing the point Labour will lose remain votes to the LibDem which splits that vote and if the Cons vote holds up, and that depends on the Brexit party, then the Cons win.
Plus the European elections did demonstrate Labour voters (and Cons voters) of 2019 will jump ship.

Labour's issue will always come back to one word 'Corbyn' and will he ever get off the fence.

Not really, any hint of compromise from Johnson and votes got to the Brexit party. I don't disagree that Corbyn remains a big problem for Labour but this post was about Tory failings.

The most likely outcome of the next election is another minority Tory government but it might be a minority Labour one which Johnson's team seem to be under-estimating.

Lewis Goodall is worth following on Brexit for the TWTD twitterati, usually tweets interesting stuff.

This is right, in my pretty ignorant opinion - Johnson seems to cut off potential sources of votes at every turn.

Soon he's got to lose the really hard Brexiteers to Farage, because he has to come forward with some sort of deal with some sort of backstop in the next few weeks. Obviously he'll try and package it as some kind of great triumph, but it won't wash with the hardcore Brexiteers, who will whip themselves up into a froth of betrayal, not unfairly, given what they've been promised.

With his work so far, and the way he's treated the cohort of principled Tory MPs who haven't supported him, he's already lost any kind of remainer vote and presumably that small (perhaps non-existent) cohort of brexit voters who aren't gung-ho about destroying the economy.

It's a bizarre strategy.

But at some point in the next month or so Johnson has to betray the DUP / ERG / hard Brexiteers, after which who will still want to vote for them?

It's almost like he's a power-crazed chancer who was so intent on becoming PM he actually had no clue on what do once he achieved it.

And this is why a GE isn't going to resolve the split over Brexit, if if it (may, but not guaranteed) unblock parliament.

This 100 times over

His original plan was to back the leave vote - pick up the support from all those leavers but then lose the referendum - that way when Cameron stepped down he would be the natural successor and have far more support than any other Tory candidate

There is a delicious irony in the fact that he now has to deal with the mess that he created himself - there is no winning solution at all - it’s just about how long he will continue
