Is there such a thing as an outing not being an outing in these millenial days?

At work yesterday I approached a small work bench where a female and male were talking. The female then said to the male 'i saw your boyfriend the other day'.

I thought, wow she's completely outed him in front of me.

It was no surprise, and maybe the guy often attends pub gatherings with said boyfriend and it's no secret.

So was this an outing or not? It was news to me, but i've not worked there that long. She could quite easily have said 'I saw Mike the other day', or do millenials not care about such trivialities?

As a footnote, the guy didn't say anything and the two moved on.

To me the only outing that matters is the one where you stop at a welcome break on the way.

My missus and youngest went on a mystery tour the other day. Last time I heard of those outings it was when my old gran used to go in with her Darby and Joan Club back in the 80s. Think Coop stand, but with a coach tiop thrown in.

It's only an outing if he didn't want you to know. But if people know his boyfriend I'm guessing that it's not really an issue for him.

Surely it's difficult enough for gay people already without having to combine it with soggy sausage rolls and bad coffee?

I assume she knows if he's happy for it to be public knowledge.

Does anyone care these days anyway?

For once I'm with J2.

Isn't it normal and acceptable? Are there really people out there who are bothered by it?

I'd agree with this. In my experience as a heterosexual person who friends have come out to: I'd say there can be circles of trust which people choose to come out to, without being publicly out, but once someone has come out publicly then it is totally in order for someone to refer to their partner as such in front of a new person to a group and it is not necessary for the individual to formally come out to each new workmate in turn.

Obviously if they have made it clear that it isn't public yet, and they are coming out in confidence, then what the workmate did would be an outing and unacceptable.

I had a similar problem last year: two junior colleagues (male and female) started going out but didn't want it to be public. I had to deny it to people who asked me if they were together. Bloody millennials!

Well that’s my point, it’s obviously not a secret but does that mean he’s ok with it being office knowledge?

He’s not flamboyant in a way that would make his sexuality obvious, in which case he really wouldn’t care
