The system is utterly f*cked by now isn’t it? We need more socialist principles in our system to stop greed inequality before we’re too far gone to fix anything.

Labour Party MP's get heavily subsidised food at work whilst many supporters rely on food banks.....

Putin shares Billions of stolen Russian assets with cronies whilst normal Russian families live in abject poverty.......

(Labour used as the original point wants socialism back)

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

I don't think this is even socialist principles required - any system shouldn't allow scum like that to act like this.

Yes, but their restaurant isn’t as good as the House of Lords and neither is the wine and brandy. Expenses are considerably less too.

On a serious note, while socialism doesn’t work, you have to have checks and balances. Where is the accountability for the people that ran Thomas Cook? The CEO was saying that half his £4m annual salary was share options. My heart bleeds for him. How can anyone survive on a paltry £2m? Actually, he and his grossly incompetent colleagues who have destroyed a 160 year old company should be facing jail.

The pay for chief execs in the past 10 years has gone through the roof. If the performance reflected that, fine, but it hasn’t. And once you are on the gravy train, the jobs and money just carry on rolling in. Cameron even tried to employ one of the berks who bankrupted Halifax PLC as a special advisor for goodness sake.

When a business of mine went tits up eight years ago I didn’t pay myself for the final three months and went into personal debt to ensure all of my staff were paid on time. I’m not a socialist.

You dint need to be a socialist to believe that there should be legislation that stops directors taking massive bonuses when a business is failing.

As opposed to the OP?

I thought that deserved to be reflected in kind.

What's wrong with it? It's an irrefutable fact and a repugnant one if you have a shred of morality, as shown by everyone else in the thread's reaction.

My place of work has a selection of free snacks and a fridge I can help myself to. I suppose this puts me on par with Thomas Cook bosses syphoning cash out the business to keep themselves more than plush whilst causing their staff members misery.

I personally think there needs to be a system in place where a business owner and/or shareholders can only take X% over what the lowest members of staff earn so everyone is rewarded by success. Seems mad there are businesses out there where the wealthiest are raking it in and expecting the government to top up underpaid staff with benefits and childcare costs.

A big issue is that a CEO and his team can (quite literally) move the share price something like 10% either way through saying something (often privately) to key investors, or by recommending potential tranactions to shareholders that they know will create value for themselves.

As daft as it sounds, the Thomas Cook senior management actually met plenty of their objectives and delivered perceived value. It was very apparent that the business wasn't sustainable some time ago and this is certainly no surprise in the City.

At every level of society and almost all walks of life there is huge disparity. I think it's grossly lazy to single out and tarnish all senior management of big corporates with the same brush.

I’m sorry but that’s a rubbish idea. Most companies will have people working menial roles at minimum wage (or close to) - so effectively you’d be setting a fixed cap on what a CEO can earn in the UK. As PrideOfTheEast points out that would make UK businesses completely uncompetitive at the top end

Clearly there are problems with the system, and Directors shouldn’t be able to earn large bonuses for failure as has happened with Thomas Cook. However ultimately they’re important, high-pressured demanding roles – and I don’t see any reason people shouldn’t be able to earn well when doing those roles successfully

The socialist system is working perfectly. It teaches people to rely on the state and not save money for themselves.

When I say % I'm not saying it will be like 10% extra. Could still be a competitive rate that prevents exploitation.

It would have to be a huge % though, given that pretty much any large business will have low paid staff at the bottom of the chain. And if a company doesn’t have that layer (or contracts out) those roles then it would be ineffective

It’s completely unworkable

This was (not sure if it still is) a Labour policy with regards to companies who have public sector contracts:

https://labour.org.uk/press/rebecca-long-bailey-responds-announcement-new-execut

They were going to set the ratio at 2000% I believe. Not sure how it would work for private companies without government contracts but the idea is certainly out there already.

So a large company that has someone at the bottom on £12k would only be able to pay their CEO £240k? Or have I misunderstood the policy?
