Dribblers on 09:12 - Sep 30 by Tangledupin_Blue | Our best dribbler was Jimmy Leadbetter. This discussion is now closed. |
Not by early sixties. He could create space and thread a pass, but dribbling, as in going past people with ball glued to foot can only be Thijssen.

Dribblers on 08:36 - Sep 30 by blueislander | Danny Hegan was pretty good. |
Trickery up there with best ever Town players, but dribbling, as in walking past players while hugging the ball, Thijssen has no rivals for me (can only speak from late 50s onwards mind). Having said that, Colin Viljoen was rather good at it too.

Dribblers on 15:36 - Sep 30 with 1866 views | Churchman | My dad always goes on about Sticks Leadbetter, but he was before my time. Jimmy Robertson wasn’t half bad and neither was Micky Lambert in his early years. Frans Thijssen clearly glued the ball to his foot. An extraordinary player. My pick: Clive Woods. Turned the Arsenal full back (Pat Rice?) inside out and backwards all afternoon.

That and ‘Arsenal go down to the Woods today’. Never a truer word spoken. I used to love those home made banners on Cup Final day.

Yes, at the time I thought more highly of him than other supporters did. I still think his close control and dribbling skills were of a very high standard.

I suppose in a way he and some of the other players that were around in the mid to late 1980's suffered in comparison with the quality that had immediately preceded them. I do not remember having strong feelings either way about Nigel Gleghorn and I think for me he was an ok player in amongst some other ok players. I think for me personally the stand out players at that time 1985-1988 were probably Mark Brennan and Romeo Zondervan.
