Today marks the centenary of Donald Pleasence, the East Midlands-born actor whose fame as Blythe in The Great Escape and baddie Blofeld in You Only Live Twice heralded a screen renaissance in his 60s and 70s, culminating in the Halloween franchise. Pleasence was a real life PoW in Stalag Luft, in 2005, his account of wartime captivity was among 80,000 made available to the public for the first time, Pleasence registered as a conscientious objector in 1939 but changed his mind after the blitz and served in the RAF as a wireless operator, flying in 60 raids. | |
