What a compelling game of rugby. Surely every sports fan was rooting for the host nation, except obviously Scots. I had a Scottish nan but that makes no odds. Kind of funny to see them get a bloody nose after much delusional guff spouted in recent years (after the the admittedly unlucky defeat to the wallabies four years ago). Japan deserved group winners.

Need to find a tournament where Japan can play every year, they need that to progress even further.

I had a Scottish gran and have a Scottish wife, but was firmly in team Japan.

Their ball handling in the first 50 minutes was sensational, they shifted the egg around with great dexterity.

They then had the resilience to hold a resurgent Scotland team at bay for the final twenty.

Great performance, hope they’ve something left in the tank for the Saffas.

Trailing vapour since 1999.

saw the last 10 minutes and loved it (and I saty that as someone who is not remotely interested in rugby). After years of watching NFL and college football over here, it was great to see a rugby game just flow and not be a mess of a stop-start game interrupted by numerous time outs and TV breaks.

I did think beforehand that events might have overwhelmed the Japanese a bit but when you see them sing the anthem you knew they were up for it.

"Delusional guff?"

Where do you get that from? Scotland has been able to give every Tier One a game and beat them over the past few years (barring NZ but that was close). Despite that they've known they've been behind England, Wales and Ireland and are trying to reach that consistency.

They deserve huge credit for raising their game considering the paltry size of the game in Scotland and the available pool of players.

Indeed, they actually need to start doing what the welsh do and use England’s pool of players as well

Maybe.

We've made use of the international residency qualification and parent/grandparent rule but to be honest we're seem to be doing better the more we develop the game within Scotland.

There's been quite a lot of infrastructure development over the last few years (the Pro14 sides and the new pro second tier which has just started) which has helped close the gap a little but the sheer number of players is the major issue. Putting aside England, France and South Africa etc. who have over 10x the number of senior male players, even Japan and the USA has 4x the number.

You realise they even it up a little bit by only letting each side have 15 though! Seriously whilst they all play selected south sea and other Southern Hemisphere types, about a third of an average welsh squad is first and foremost English. Same goes for the footy team. Glad to see McGinn do well today, he’s outstanding at the moment

Reading this not zoomed it looks like Jason Scotland.

That’s all, sorry. I don’t really watch rugby.

Of course. But a small pyramid exposes weakness and a lack of strength in depth. I think Scotland's front-row issues are a case in point. There's just not enough players playing at a high enough level to develop the technique necessary for international rugby and it's probably been our Achilles heel over the past few years even when everything else is starting to work well.

Yes, McGinn is great. Great to see an ex-Hibee doing well for club and country.
