According to the Bulgarian goalkeeper.

Just highlighting what we already know: plenty of people in Bulgaria don't think it's an issue and have a strange definition of racism.

It's a societal problem which they need to address, it's not a specific football issue.

N0b.

Just like their manager, more interested in currying favour with their ‘ultras’ than on tackling racism.

Fair play to their captain and the coverage in the Bulgarian press shows that the idiots are by no means representative of the average Bulgarian, any more than our hooligans typify English people.

This is why change won't come quickly. The monkey chants were clearly audible listening at home, there's no way he couldn't have heard them. He clearly just doesn't think monkey chants are a big deal, and therein lies the problem. If some of the players and the manager don't even acknowledge that there is an issue to be addressed then there's not much hope.

Seems the Prime Minster of Bulgaria has a different view to the keeper and the manager. He's started wielding the axe and freezing the funding for the Bulgarian FA:

That's a positive step, but the problem is clearly pretty deeply ingrained. There were a number of people there happily doing Nazi salutes, that's pretty troubling.

It's also a bit weird given their attitudes to the Slavs in WW2. Lets face it though, they aren't likely to be well educated people.

You are right though, a lot of work to be done to change attitudes.

How many black people are there in Bulgaria?

It's a matter of exposure. It's no coincidence that these appalling views and acts are carried out by the countries that have almost no black people living there. As such, they haven't grown up realising that we are all equal, but with some 50-100 year old view that society hasn't had to overcome like we have.

Not excusing them, but it's something that only comes up now and then in the country no doubt with things like this, that they then have little incentive to change because a few years might pass until another incident.

In the meantime no black person is likely to go and work there, study there or live there, so they never get to actually overcome the prejudices and moronic, outdated views.

Until countries that have limited exposure to 'small problems' as they probably see them, go all out to address them, then nothing will change. That's why FIFA / UEFA need to throw the absolute book at them - to educate them that this is not okay and whatever goes on in Bulgaria, the rest of world thinks you are wrong.

They literally had black players in their team last night.

So have Russia and Italy and a number of other countries that have problems with racism.

I'm not suggesting that there are no black people in these countries. But when it is less than 0.2% of the population, which I think is the case with Bulgaria, there will be millions of Bulgarians who have never even met a black person in the city, town or village they live in and on that basis they'd have probably taken very little interest in educating themselves and evolving from their ridiculous mindset, one that most of the world held 200 years ago, until people started to realise that they were no different from anyone else and slowly attitudes changed.

The fact that Bulgaria and some other Bulgarian clubs will have a few black players will do nothing to change that. The same Millwall fans that abuse foreign players would worship the same bloke if he moved to their club and did the business. It doesn't mean they aren't racist, they just don't hate that person as much because they have a tangible reason not to, as ridiculous as that might be.
