Transgender women competing in women's sports.... 15:31 - Oct 18 with 16594 viewsitfcjoe

.....this is becoming an issue it seems.

A male born woman is the world champion in a track cycling event and defends that in Manchester on at the weekend. Canadian called Rachel McKinnon

https://news.sky.com/story/trans-cyclist-rachel-mckinnon-defends-her-right-to-ra

Also mentions in there a formerly male weightlifter who competed, who has now transitioned across to the women's side and won 2 gold's at the Pacific Games.

It can't just be me that thinks this is just ridiculous, it's not something that needs great debate surely - men have a huge physical advantage over women with the evidence being every sport in the world where men are faster, stronger and quicker.

When you look back at the 80s and see the lengths that the Eastern bloc would go to to win medals, and how heavily abused the women were with their hormone treatments which have turned a few into men later in life as they had so much testosterone it's obvious this will be abused.

And current case with Caster Semenya as well and her levels.

It does seem at the moment that trans rights just trump women's rights whilst everyone tries to be a bit too woke and not say the obvious.

I can't help but notice that the woke folk on this thread are yet to suggest an answer to this one.

You didn't read down far enough.

What about a simple 'cis male', 'cis female', 'non-binary' classification? Or is that over-simplifying somewhat?

They don't have to. All they have to do is mock those who apply common sense until they are silenced.

The thing about a lot of 'common sense' is a) it isn't very common and b) it's doesn't often make sense.

Thanks.

All those saying it's complicated because there are important human rights issues at stake will change their tune the minute Russia decides to start a state run transexual athletics program.

It's not about human rights at all.

If you don’t think it’s about human rights (i.e. people wanting to be recognised for who they are) then you haven’t been following the stories of transgender athletes fighting for recognition. Of course human rights are part of it. But it shouldn’t be the only issue.

As a side question thrown out to the group, why have the “tell it like it is brigade” ((c) Badger) suddenly started using the word ‘woke’ at every opportunity?

Is there a more pointless term at the moment than ‘cis’, it’s just an unnecessary further classification surely?

I just assumed it was part of the plan to normalise having a label and to fight the idea that being cis is 'normal'.

I do think using the word woke is acceptable. Lots on Twitter use it when arguing for trans rights. I also think it's fair enough to point out that SOME are so desperate to be woke that they will dismiss common sense ideas as prejudice.

I don't think it is unnecessary. It informs people that the gender you identify with matches your body. Just saying 'male' or 'female' doesn't always do that. You can identify as male and that not match your body, for example.

It's actually from Latin, meaning “on the same side.” In this use it obviously means your gender and your body are in alignment.

Personally I don't get too worked up about about. It's just a word and if someone wants to say they are male or female instead, who is going to stop them?

Being cis is typical, or prevalent. Every gender variation is normal though. It's a small but important distinction really.

On the other hand, many distasteful opinions are held and protected under the banner of 'Common Sense' so it works both ways.

For many' common sense' is actually shorthand for 'It's always been this way and this new way makes me uncomfortable and I don't quite understand it so I don't like it and it is wrong'.

I still don't see your objection. It probably feels that way living somewhere like Ipswich to be honest, but if you live somewhere more diverse it becomes relevant.
