are some of the most annoying people ever to walk the planet. Especially those who all get the benefits of living in a capitalist society.

Why should people feel guilty for working hard being successful and earning lots of money? Not to mention they pay a lot more in tax. Listening to Corbyn makes me want to throw up.

However, if I have misjudged you and you do happen to be a billionaire, I look forward to enjoying your wealth and taking your cow.

My sister complained that the proposed mansion tax would unfairly hit my mum's wealth. What she misjudged was the fact her house was never going to be valued at over £1M and if she chooses to remain living on her own in a 4 bed detached house and can afford to pay, why shouldn't she pay a little more anyway?

I genuinely believe it's a combination of people being misinformed about policy and some people's desperation to project themselves as being in, or within touching distance of the top 5%.

The former is frustrating but the latter I find quite sad.

err the suggestion, additionally, is to remove inheritance tax and allow £125k lifetime allowance only. So it will hit her presumably...

The mansion tax? That's what she was complaining about - not the current policy.

I can understand the £125k lifetime allowance would hit more people in terms of inheritance. However, it is proposed policy and with my 7 siblings it would mean we would all get our share of Mum's £1M savings including the value of her home tax free.

By-the-way I am being deliberately inaccurate with some details but the headline would be read by many as she can only leave £125K tax free whereas it is actually a proposal you can only inherit from that one individual a maximum of £125K [EDIT: before paying some tax on what you get above that] which is quite different unless you are a single child.

The UK does have rich people and people in poverty. His argument is that people at the top should bear the burden of taxation to help people out of poverty, rather than people who are in low paid work ( many of whom are in poverty themselves.) Under Labour's tax plan, someone earning £85,000 per year would pay an extra £21 in tax per month, hardly revolutionary stuff.

And going back to your previous point about working hard, surely you don't believe that all people in poverty don't work hard?

They don't have a consistent ideology, more a loose set of ideas designed to maintain positions of privilege for those that already have it.

BILLIONAIRES. Billions. Do people actually stop and think about how much a billion is when we’re having these discussions? We’re not talking millionaires here, who would be considered very wealthy by most people.

A billion is 35.7 THOUSAND times the average full time annual wage.

If you were to count out one million seconds it would take you 11.5 days. To count a billion seconds would take 31.7 YEARS.

Anyone who thinks that level of wealth isn’t obscene when kids are going hungry through school holidays has got serious detachment and empathy issues.

Besides, Britain only has 151 billionaires, the vast majority of whom are tax exiles domiciled overseas. Defending a few people who have made their fortunes in the UK and then moved their wealth offshore to avoid contributing at the same rate as the rest of us is just bizarre. How have the Tories managed to persuade poor people to be cheerleaders for the ultra-rich is one of life’s mysteries.

I hadn’t got this far when I joined the thread so hadn’t seen this, but yes this. This and more this. Times, er, I guess 1 billion would be appropriate.

I can’t wrap my head around it. Maggie’s fault I reckon. Some twot earns enough to buy a nearly new Porsche Boxter (probably whilst still owing the bank for their house) and think they’ve made it and are part of the rich elite. Or something 🤷‍♂️

Corbyn constantly goes on about the UK having rich people and the UK having people in poverty, he's an old school socialist and you know it. Unfortunately it won't fly or work in 2019 though.

Socialism will never work in this country now as it is too immersed in greed culture and legacy.

Living life to Socialist values in a forward-thinking caring society would work, though.

I would argue that boiling any subject or view down to a singular point can be nothing more than an generalisation and thus is both pointless and silly. One could go further and say it's unhelpful to the debate and stokes division.

You should address the points made on merit not bluster. For instance, one doesn't need to feel guilty for earning a lot of money if one is putting their share back into the societal pot.

Nowadays people seem to want to make subjects and motives mutually exclusive when in reality a sensible approach would be to have a melding of many subjects and motives to come up with something that works for everyone.

I don't agree with a lot of what JC and McDonnell say (especially McDonnell) but that doesn't mean there isn't a baseline truth in what they are saying - they just often take a bit far for me personally. This is where a melding of ideas is required rather then the exclusivity.

The country is pretty farked at the moment - we need ideas and debate.

Not so much Wealth Creators but more like Wealth Takers.
Money given to the low-paid gets spent in the shops and that attracts VAT so some of the money goes back to the Treasury to be spent again. If it's placed off-shore it never gets spent again in this country.

Anyone using the term 'wealth creator' to describe what is essentially a parasite needs to be directed to some good old school Marxian economic theory, in particular the notion of surplus value.
