Its very difficult not to conclude that he thinks being 'out' of the game benefits the cause more than being back 'in' it.

That's not right or wrong, but its not really about commitment. As others have said, he has already earned enough to see himself alright forever and the money keeps on flowing in anyway. He is not your average joe on the picket line.
