free broadband for all 22:08 - Nov 14 with 12708 viewslowhouseblue

nationalising bt and we all get free broad band. cool.
come on labour, add sky to the list so that we get free sky sports as well - what's the point of having the free broadband otherwise.
yeah free stuff.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Since 2010 the taxpayer has given BT the best part of £4 Billion.
BT at the same time they pocketed that paid a fortune for a German mobile Phone Co
And commenced BT sport at the cost of several £ Billions.
You tories are happy to keep subsidising these companies - why?
Back in the 70's PO telephones was one of the ofremeost telecoms companies in the world
It is now lame duck - why should we continue to pay premium prices for a non BB package?

I think you’ve got your lame ducks mixed up! I worked for the GPO in the 70s and it was a joke. It could take 6 months to get a phone installed. Do you remember Party lines where you shared the line with neighbours. I also recall the last Labour government charging BT aWindfall tax in the ‘90s

I'm sure it is all suggested with the best of intentions, but come on, does anyone really think that the moment any new tax laws are implemented, or even the current ones enforced, to obtain the billions of pounds from Amazon/Facebook/Google etc, they won't immediately change their tax arrangements to avoid it?

I think EU rules wouldn’t prohibit a state owned Broadband provider but they would take exception to it being a free service as that prevents effective competition.

Yes, that is what I meant to say and you are indeed correct.

I am not sure they are correct given that the EU has previously funded the development of free internet provision.

Free WiFi away from your residence is a bit different to a universal broadband service don’t you think?

Free wifi away from your residence is in theory eliminating competition for mobile phone companies data use, so I don't think it is that different if we're talking about the effects on competition.

No they wouldn’t. If it’s state owned it’s not a state aid issue. Take the example of Luxembourg who are making all public transport free from next year. State Aid doesn’t stop nationalisation or free public services.

I disagree, I make LTF right.

Aside from that - Labour estimate the cost at £20bn but BT have said it's closer to £100bn

There are also currently 640 private firms offering broadband, what is going to happen to them.

Agree that it doesn’t stop nationalisation, though I don’t think the free service bit is as clear cut due to it preventing effective competition. Taken from the New Statesman - “If you had a situation in which the day-to-day running of Openreach made it impossible for other broadband providers to operate, then that could open a future government up to a court challenge under the rules of the single market or under any free trade agreement with the European Union.

Niner

There are two things that amaze me in life, one of them is how come you have such a beautiful wife.

I'm sort of in favour of nationalising certain things, mostly the railway, but you and I are both old enough to remember what a complete pile of sh1te it was when it was nationalised and it only got better once it went into private hands.

I still think that power and transport should be controlled by the government and that everyone should be able to get to work on time at a reasonable cost and that everyone should be able to afford to keep themselves warm but it simply didn't happen.

Except that it’s anything but a universal service that would do away with the need for mobile data. It also seems a strange arrangement as operators get vouchers worth 15000 euros for equipment and installation but must pay for the actual connectivity.

Labour appear to be using the government's own figures, which suggested it could be done for £20.3bn under a national monopoly model, vs £32bn under an "enhanced competition" model.

See summary on p102: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attac

I wouldn't trust the current governments figures either over those at the head of the company doing the work.

It's not a Labour Vs Tory issue for me so it doesn't matter where the lower figures come from. Governments are notoriously bad at costing these for types of things (see Crossrail, HS2, aircraft carriers etc for recent examples).

I know the head of BT has a vested interest but the figure is likely to be somewhere in the middle.
