Anyone who has a job and pays taxes here, should be covered. He and the Tories are playing on the foreigners are bad card again. EEA nationals paid £21.6 billion in income tax and national insurance in 2016/17. They received £3 billion in tax credits and child benefits. In other words, they contributed a net £18.6 billion (more than twice our EU membership fee!) to the Treasury. The cost of NHS use is around £500m a year by ‘foreigners’ and about £100m is recovered on average. This is not why the NHS is on its arse.
Dog whistle politics at its worst on 22:00 - Nov 17 with 2887 views | Darth_Koont | Isn't that a lot down to our own government not able to organize recouping the money it's entitled to from other EU countries for treatment of their citizens? Agreed re: the dogwhistling and the insult when we're otherwise dependent on foreign workers for the NHS to even function at all. All seems a bit scapegoat-y and nasty for problems that are still largely down to their own underfunding and mismanagement. What else have they got though?

And of course post Brexit, if we are not in the EEA, our EHIC cards will be useless in the EU - people seem to forget that it works both ways.. Looks like the Govt want other EU countries to honour them till Dec 2020, but we won't if we leave on Jan 31st...... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-49989227

Because it’s yet more demonising of immigrants and playing to the crowd, without any regard for the huge contribution they make to our country. A hostile environment indeed.

I somehow missed that this was in addition to taxes. 'Anyone who has a job and pays taxes here, should be covered.' Fully agree with this.

'Anyone who has a job or pays taxes here, should be covered.' That's of course what you meant. Unless you're giving vent to your rampant ageism again.

For starters, it's an outright lie. Any EU national visiting the country needing medical treatment will have it paid for thanks to reciprocal arrangements with the EU via the EHIC. Non EU visitors are charged at a rate of 150% NHS rate. [Post edited 18 Nov 2019 11:09]

For context, the cost to the NHS of the internal market system(that's the tier of management dedicated to outsourcing services to the private sector) is 8 times that. At least.

I say this an NHS loving left of centre person... ... to be fair the tweet says that non-UK residents should have to pay. A foreigner who is paying tax and NI in the UK would be classed as resident (otherwise they wouldn't have an NI number) and therefore would be exempt. In fact that persons immediate family (if in the UK) would also be conferred with resident status so would also not have to pay. I see this as more of a crack down on illegal immigrants and health tourists rather than overseas families living and working in the UK. I'm not making any judgement on the rights and wrongs, merely commenting as a UK citizen who is an expat overseas (and therefore resident overseas). Which makes me wonder as a British citizen who is not resident in the UK whether I would therefore have to pay for NHS treatment under this policy??
Dog whistle politics at its worst on 04:18 - Nov 18 with 2427 views | NewcyBlue | “ Only 139,000 foreign nationals working to keep the NHS going” It really is the International Health Service. We should be proud of it and all those who work to keep it going. When I go pick up MrsN from the hospital she works at, I normally get surrounded by Filipinos who know I speak a bit of Tagalog. It’s wonderful. The shouts of kabigan that hear and the smiling faces. We had a Nigerian doctor for one of our rounds of IVF and I talked to him about Lagos, and the Bonny River, and the state of Nigeria.
