Congratulations to the Conservatives. 06:44 - Dec 13 with 2144 views | DanTheMan | I really do hope with their strong majority they prove me wrong and actually improve the country after a decade of austerity. Oh and sort out Brexit properly. No excuses this time.

Congratulations to the Conservatives. on 08:06 - Dec 13 by GeoffSentence | The silver lining is that those on the far right of the tory party hold less sway now. Here's hoping that we see a gentler, kinder conservative party. |
Mate, the far right of the tory party is currently settling back into number 10.

Congratulations to the Conservatives. on 08:10 - Dec 13 by artsbossbeard | Whilst I could never bring myself to type that title, your underlying text is spot on. Just need to make sure that this elected bunch keep to their manifesto promises, oh and end this awful austerity drive. |
Graceful in defeat and all that. Forgot to add to the OP, climate change should be looked at. Hopefully we're not one of those at the conference right now who is making life difficult for the island nations.

Given that a lot of them are in his cabinet, I fear not.

Congratulations to the Conservatives. on 08:59 - Dec 13 with 538 views | Plums | Can’t believe Broxtowe elected a candidate who had previously been parachuted into four constituencies and rejected four times. His comments on food banks and payday loans didn’t even damage this time around. I take my hat off to the Tories, the have taken an issue no one really cared about and turned it into a rallying cry that has decimated their ‘opponents’ (if they can be called that). I truly fear for the vulnerable in society though.

Congratulations to the Conservatives. on 09:11 - Dec 13 with 531 views | baxterbasics | Well if Johnson's speech just now is anything to go by, they are aware that lots of people lent a vote on this. There is now a swathe of Conservative MPs representing poorer working class areas that would no doubt like to keep their seat next time too, and maybe - it's a stretch I know - maybe will actually care about their constituents concerns. I predict we will see a different Conservative party, moderate, investing more in the services people want. Not silly Labour numbers of course, just a gradual, sensible easing off of austerity. I hope all those screeching all campaign about NHS cuts and selloffs will admit as much when they are shown to be wrong.

I'd love you to be right. I hold next to no hope that it will happen however. And how they're going to mitigate the effects of Brexit on those areas is currently a mystery.

Already going well today, announcing a budget increase for the NHS which, whilst sounding good and obviously helping, is still below the historical average. Basically the sort of thing I've been worried about. Soundbites without actually really doing much to actually reverse anything.

We're going to believe it better, you watch. (Hopefully that'll stop the Voluntary Severance scheme we've just introduced because EU funding and student numbers have crashed through the floor).

But that'll be spun to how wonderful they are and people will believe it. They were going to ease the pressure on some key services, but by nowhere near enough. Not enough to keep pace with demand, not enough for people who've assessed the needs across different sectors, and as you say also at levels of growth well below long-term historical averages. We'll move to austerity light. So, slightly better. But then chuck the negative consequences of Brexit on top and I very much doubt people on the ground will be feeling like things are getting any better.

This is what I think too. I also think he didnt have a clue what he was agreeing to when Varadkhar took him for a walk, to wit his refusal to acknowledge there will be a line across the Irish sea. Brexit in name only is plenty good enough for him and his ego, he is basically Heseltine-lite anyway when it comes to policy, so I expect to see a lot of infrastructure spending which hopefully will start to offset the misery of austerity which will probably go on for another year or so.

Sorry if I'm being dense, but I'd aways viewed Johnson as being on the far right himself, and siding with the ERG group whenever expedient? Well expediently siding with anything and everything that he thought would further boost his personal bank balance and his personal career in fact.

There has to be an end to austerity, it will need more than the Conservatives will give it but it will creep the right direction

No Boris is a centrist and on the liberal wing of the party. He was only aligned with the ERG over Brexit. You don't win Mayor of London twice in a row from the right. If you go with the Boris is self interested and power seeking line, well the good news is this also encourages centrist politics, because under FPTP you need the centre ground to win elections.

"He was only aligned with the ERG over Brexit." Err, but doesn't that kinda prove my point about expediency? And they were a one-issue group (Brexit obvs) anyway?

Congratulations to the Conservatives. on 10:28 - Dec 13 with 442 views | WarkTheWarkITFC | I had thought yesterday the one silver lining was that if the Tories won they simply couldn't blame Labour for anything any more and would have to deliver or the country would turn on them. The problem now being that even if a large proportion of the country hates them in 5 years because they have completely screwed people further and lied about everything, they have such a lead now in the next race that even that wouldn't be able to get them out. They literally have a carte blanche to do whatever they want now because they know it'll be 10-15 years before labour could ever get back into power no matter what they do. They could literally start shooting the poor in the streets and I still think they'd just about cling on to power next time.

Boris is Boris. He'll happily pander to anyone to get what he wants. So let's see who's pulling his strings now before we decide if he's going to suddenly turn into a great liberal.

Fun 'fact'. Given there are 260k jews in the UK, and they've been split over the Corbyn issue, there's a good chance that more people have died unnecessary, preventable deaths due to government policies than there are Jews who feel threatened by Jeremy Corbyn. Not that I want to diminish the serous nature of antisemitism, but it shows how things have been skewed.

I don't doubt there are people in the labour party that hold views that are abhorrent when it comes to Jews. That rightly needs to be called out and sorted. I have no issue with people feeling Corbyn should have dealt with this issue or wasn't fit to lead. But when you put it next to the alternative. An open racist and sexist who openly holds worse views over blacks and muslims than anyone in labour likely holds against jews, then it absolutely mental. It's like a game of racism top trumps sadly. I guess some people are okay with this because maybe the jews look a bit more like them? Goodness knows how these peoples minds work.
