I think Livingstone means more that the issue should have been tackled earlier through a stronger and more public defence against the wider charge of being an antisemitic party (while of course taking antisemitic incidents seriously and dealing with them).

Absolutely. The narrative has been characterised by smeary accusations, not the incidents of antisemitism or the actual level across the party.
Expecting that the truth would win out was a naive approach. Meanwhile it let the Tories completely off the hook for their worse record on racism (incidents and the handling of them, not to mention policies).
When the Labour Party just doesn't have the media platform of the Tories (or even the accusers themselves) they needed to be a LOT louder on this. | |
