Was with Gem, current contract runs out in a few days, not 100% happy with them

Need the usuals - both home & roadside recovery etc.

I’ve used Greenflag and the RAC, but AA are by far the best.

Their original quote will be high, but you can easily barter them down to a very competitive price.

Moose Tow Inc. ($16.99+VAT). That's inflation for you.

Edit - sorry no. I was in the AA last time out and they were excellent. But the renewal was silly price. Edit - which I should have battered them down on, obviously

Whoever you choose just make sure you check and recheck the coverage they're offering.

One firm may use similar terms to another and have their own interpretation.

I've have been using START and they're as good as any of the others, but half the price.

Actually, as they give you free Legal Expenses cover, which isn't really worth a lot, but costs usually around the £25 mark everywhere, it's already a decent discount.

But again, even there, phone before hand explaining precisely what you're after in real terms before selecting.

I joined Driver Guardian a couple of months ago. Like you I was with GEM, no breakdown issues but a bit expensive. I haven't had to use Driver Guardian for a breakdown yet thankfully but chose them based on price and positive online reviews.

New one to me, but will check 'em out along with the AA, Green Flag, Eversure & Start - cheers all 👍

Just in case it's not clear - and I am not meaning to be condescending - the Legal Expenses is normally taken out with your insurance renewal each year.

One of those things that used to be automatically included with Fully Comp Insurance but now of course you are quoted and then have to tick various boxes for add-ons for stuff you thought you were already about to pay for.

My renewal this year - due in a fortnight or so - is still only about 40 quid. It seems to go up a fiver each year with the same car, as understandably the car is a year older.

A fiver more. Then they give you a £25 Legal Expenses free.

In other words, my cover last year was a tenner.

I have called them out before and they simply use local breakdown firms, which is what most do now anyways.

Which is fine, so long as the fecker doesn't take a break and sit on your bonnet.

When that happens your car is worthless anyway.

Good points, cheers, but it's your last para that interests me most - am a bit shocked at that, as it's what Gem does & why I'm not really happy with them - because the level of responder varies so much. Another question to ask when I ring around!

They all do the same.

The days of a firm having nice, shiny vehicles of their own just waiting around roadside for a call are long gone. Those machines are tens of thousands of pounds.

Most breakdown companies have a few of their own but then subsidise using local firms.

Say, you break down in the Peaks, or the Highlands, or around your way...

Common sense tells you there won't be an AA vehicle sitting there nearby.

But there may be a local specialist. Same thing. Without the shiny grin and paintwork.

I am in the market for some breakdown insurance at the moment as it happens. Used Go Compare for some basic quotes and the cheapest three were all around £24: 2gether, Dynamo Breakdown and Nova Direct. Never heard of any of them and would be interested if anyone else has, and even more interested if anyone has direct experience with any of them.

I've been happy for many years with Green Flag (which was recommended to me by a garage owner who used to work for them).

I was in a multiple pile up on the M25 a few years ago... and each of the immobilized cars was with a different provider. As a one off survey of who is the best responder I can tell you that Green Flag were quickest, RAC were second quickest - and the lady waiting for the AA was still waiting when I departed - even though the crash site was close to the AA depot at South Mimms.

Since then I've had reason to use the 'free' service provided by my bank and it gave me a nice hotel, taxi and hire cars in the UK and France... allegedly RAC... though they were not in evidence must have been 'euro partners';

Not quite correct. The AA do still have their own fleets, possibly the RAC too.

Having got 4 online quotes (StartRescue, GreenFlag, RAC, (all £80-£85 for At home, Rescue & Long Distance recovery for a 20 year old Landrover, I then got one from the AA - over £170! Tried to phone them to barter - after 26 minutes on hold, a grumpy/argumentative rep answered & tried to tell me that the RAC quote was wrong. After he'd spent several minutes going onto their site to try & prove it (didn't), I'd had enough of them & ended the call.

In the end went with Green Flag - £80.64 for Rescue+ (At home, Rescue, Long Distance Recovery) - tho I might have gone with the RAC if I'd read this first (tho tbf it was 4 years ago).

I wasn't suggesting none of them have their own fleet.

I know full well the big firms have their own fleet. You see them all the time.

But none of them use only their own vehicles - it's simply not possible. They would need one on every corner of the country.

For example, the last truck that came out to me contracts to pretty much every rescue firm out there, including the AA, RAC, Start, Green Flag...

Good you got the cover you need anyway. For a motor that age then that's not bad for the peace of mind.
