There will be some Royalists. But the majority would probably say Burley. Add in that he sold players year on year and brought on good players from the youth team. There is also the ITFC connection. Whether it is right or not is a different question.

Ont he basis of how well he fared in the transfer market, I wouldn't be above Burley coming in a as a proper Director of Football rather than the glorified sports scientist we have now. Butcher, club legend as player he might be, is a terrible manager.

I presume you’re excluding his final season of dealings from that statement?

I bet if these same fans were on the hook for millions and millions they would take a more self interested approach and make a business decision - which means bringing in a manager who has not been out of the game for 15 years with an assistant who has never ever managed anyone at a professional level, and then miraculously expect them to deliver success like knights in shining armour. Burley was manager for almost eight years. For six of them we ranged from good to fantastic.

Burley presided over the near death of the club, and totally f***ed things up having got promoted and finished in a very good position. His bad judgement caused lots of rubbish players to be brought in on huge wages and we got relegated. He had his time. We all thank him for what he did. But he couldn’t sustain it. And if he couldn’t do it then, how likely is it he will do it almost 20 years later. He’s been out of the game, doesn’t know the players or coaches, and by all accounts has a few issues off the pitch. He wasn’t even interviewed last time.

Whilst a lot of what you write there is true, he could hardly do much worse than our last two appointments, could he?
