A passenger plane happens to crash over Iran around the same time a load of missiles are flying around in the region. Am I the only one who thinks the odds of these being unrelated events are pretty slim?!

Could have been more missiles or some other military activity or something.
Of course, it could just be a coincidence. I'm just saying that with the low odds of a plane crashing the odds of this happening that close to missile strikes as independent events must be millions to one.

Extremely unlikely to have been a 'stray' ballistic missile, chances of that are miniscule. Timing also does not match that of the known missile strikes.

An over-enthusiastic/jumpy fighter controller or commander of an anti-aircraft missile battery, on the other hand, is quite a likely scenario (happened with MH17, the Vincennes incident and KAL007).

Seems unlikely that a modern plane (2016) checked two days ago would have engine failure to that extent which would cause it to burst into flames.

Absolutely horrific for those poor people involved.

They were also very quick to claim it was a technical failure although they have apparently withdrawn that comment now.

I expected them to blame the Americans. The fact they haven’t and won’t hand over the black box either is interesting.
