Royal Mail opt out 10:40 - Jan 11 with 1272 viewsNthQldITFC

I should have done something about this years ago.

The postie put five pieces of unsolicited marketing crap through my letterbox this morning, nothing addressed to me, or even to 'The occupier'. Just had a look at their website which says, to paraphrase, "if you tell us to stop delivering this crap, we'll also can't deliver (unaddressed) 'material from Central and Local Government and other public bodies'".

I'll do it anyway, but are there any 'important' things I can't think of that might be unaddressed? Cheers.

Stuff addressed to 'The Occupier' from your local authority would include notifications that your neighbour is going to build a skyscraper in his garden, a metre from your window.

Thanks, yes but I think the opt out excludes anything addressed to the occupier, which makes me wonder how effective it is? Are marketing departments 'not allowed' to use 'The occupier' on their blind mail shots?

I'm not sure marketing people obey any rules.

It's only a small and petty victory, but post back freepost or similar envelopes empty to the organisation involved. They pay by volume for receiving those deliveries.

I object to all forms of unsolicited mail, including the stuff from the Post Office. All flyers go straight in the recycling bin without even a cursory glance, especially the inserts in newspapers and magazines. The perpetrators of this nuisance must be aware that 99% of it gets this treatment, but it must be cost-effective for them, or they wouldn't persist with it.

The other factor is that the Post Office is paid to deliver the crap, which keeps the postie in a job and (in theory, anyway) helps to keep down the cost of stamps.

Unfortunately, as you infer, it is almost impossible to stop it.
