When are ITFC fans gonna realise we aren't the best team in this league 12:03 - Jan 29 with 3563 viewskizaitfc

We finished rock bottom last season for good reason.

Say what you like about our players on paper, they are not good enough to walk this league.

We need to lower our expectations, we will be in and around the top 4 places IMO but we cannot expect to go and win and play well every game.

If someone can explain to me why they think we should be winning this league with ease I'm all ears but simply we are Ipswich and we have the best squad in the league is not going to cut it. There are several players I would swap with the likes or Peterborough, Sunderland, Rotherham and even Wycombe.

If we don't go up this season the flouncing on here is going to be on another level. We're a work in progress, our turnaround given how we were last season is impressive and Lambert deserves a fair bit of credit which he won't get from most. Few teams go from rock bottom hopeless to comfortable champions, yes he's got some things wrong and we're far from perfect, but considerable progress is being made. Give it time and there is every reason to believe we'll come good.

Much of that is beyond dispute, but half-a-dozen of those who started weren't available last year (I include an unfit Keane in that). Mick would have met hoof with hoof more effectively, but with what we've got, and the slicker way we're looking to play, we still need to have more steel in us. Good players , which we clearly possess no matter your historical analysis, should be able to find a way to play against different styles and not meet every pedestrian but rugged side as if we were each time a Goliath surrendering meekly to yet another non-league, cup-tie David.

Agree, the football Saturday was what ITFC fans have wanted to see for a long time, patient build up play, keeping the ball rather then launching it. Obviously last night reverted back somewhat.

Problem with not going up will be the work done could be unravelled by losing some key players. There is certainly pressure on getting up, but I'm not going to flounce when we lose to a team that are very good at this level and play a style of football that very much seems to be our weakness at the minute, something PL needs to address in the summer IMO.

"Meeting hoof with hoof" was exactly what most ITFC fans disliked about Mick.

PL has built a team that isn't strong at the hoof game, therefore the players, mostly the defenders particularly Chambers need to realise that and keep the ball on the deck and play balls into the strikers feet. Just like we did Saturday.

A work in progress?

Sorry but that certainly isn't correct.

Two things of note:

1. This squad has players that would talk into many other League 1 starting XIs
2. Lambert has had enough time to not only shape the squad but to also work out his strongest XI and best formation(s) for a Plan A and Plan B approach

This division was never going to be easy but given Evan's approach - if we don't go up this season with this squad we'll struggle.

Do you think the likes of Downes, Wolfenden, Jackson, Judge, Huws etc. will be here next year if we are in this league?

This league was going to be tough but here are two further observations over and above the ones below.

1. A great start to the season showed what was possible
2. Tinkering caused a huge issues with consistency

We've only got ourselves to blame for not building on our early form.

But, as is the Ipswich way over the past (many) years, we can only do that when we are not being pressed.

Ergo last nights hoofing.

So you want Lambert to know his best 11 and have a plan B, yet he's not allowed to "tinker". You can't have it both ways.

There's tinkering, and there's completely changing the system and personnel game after game.

On topic, I didn't expect us to be the best side in the league, however I also did not expect us to get relegated so easily last year either.

I'm not going to give credit to the manager who got us relegated. Sure, he was dealt a rough hand, but he did not better than the manager we sacked in the first place.

Dealt a rough hand is putting it mildly.

This is the same old weary argument and we could go round and round for a while, but history shows that established Championship sides who slide into this division find it very tough going and typically take a few years to get out. There is still plenty of reason to believe we will buck that trend, the top end of the table is very tight, only Coventry have lost fewer games than us and we have the tightest defence in the division.

Nobody ever said it was going to be easy.

If we don't go up this season, we have failed.

We will lose Downes, Woolfie. Will be harder to sign Garbutt. Lambert has the squad. Of course there are players you would pinch here and there, but I would bet that every league one manager would swap squads with ours. This league is total guff, us included. But we have the quality to win this league, it is that simple, it is about getting the best out of the players imo.

Hang on, what?

Never have I come across a time where some of our fans are so, so lacking in any kind of ambition.

Lambert deserves credit??! For what exactly does he deserve credit for that's FOOTBALL related? For relegating us? For taking us over in the Championship and literally improving us by 0. Not improving us from a point where we were being managed by our worst manager in recent history?

Or maybe he deserves credit for having the biggest wage bill in League One and not having us look anywhere near like a team that's going to win the League?

Or perhaps he deserves credit for, despite coming in last season and having, for some reason, a complete 'free hit' from fans, not being able to vaguely ascertain a brand and style of football, a system and implement it?

Maybe he deserves credit for not beating any of the top 8 or so teams in this League, despite having one of the biggest squads on the highest wages?

We have been in a continual state of decline for 10 years or so. The Hurst experiment was the biggest sudden drop to date, he inherited a total mess of a squad not good enough to compete in the division, on the bones of it's collective backside and only a notoriously difficult January window to do anything about it.

He deserves credit for the fact that we are not languishing mid-table in this division, are a good team on our day and play a positive, progressive style of football. Everything you've written about wage bill, squad size, means nothing in the face of the hangover which follows relegation from a level you've been accustomed to for years. It's not a simple as saying we're Ipswich Town, we should be top of the league.

Getting a bit fed up with this attitude, and have been for several years.

The whole club from the top to bottom needs to set higher standards. Evans' running of the club is sub-standard and it filters down. Fair enough he has to set the parameters with the financial support he can provide but not since Mick's early seasons have we really, as a club, said 'we're Ipswich Town, and we deserve better than what we have now'.

Not that we have to be arrogant or think we have a divine right to be competing at the top end of the division above but just back ourselves a bit rather than making excuses when things aren't going well and papering over cracks with flimsy positivity.

At pitch level, there's only so long you can go 'chin up, plenty of games left' before it's too late. Lambert spent most of last season saying that and couldn't even lift us off the bottom.

The little things add up as well - that it's taken this long for parts of the ground to be touched up (I appreciate things get in the way) is a shambles frankly. Add to that the clearly sub-par/non-existent recovery room, gym etc. that even Hurst was shocked at then it borders a disgrace.

People got (rightly) irked at Berra saying 'we're not Barcelona' when we were competing in the Championship but now there seems to be more of an acceptance for Lambert's 'helluva tough league, plenty of big clubs got stuck in it before' comments.

Yeah no-one realistically expected us to walk it but at a base level we should automatically be right up there as this league is full of dross with a big gap between it and the Championship as the last 2 seasons have proven to us.

Naturally, immediate post-game comments are going to be a bit more emotive and prone to some exaggeration which tends to end up with people being accused of flouncing but it's a genuine concern that we struggle to assert ourselves against teams around us as it means the playoffs are a non-starter even given our usual expectations of the bloody things.

Do you think the likes of Sheffield United, Southampton, Norwich, even Leicester etc. got to where they are by sitting back and going 'well we are who we are and we have to put up with that'? Of course not. They also had a few brain cells to rub together at the top level of the club with a clear plan which we'll never have under Evans but still.

I know they're a self-righteous bunch of deluded nobs but Leeds, for an example, have an unwavering belief that they deserve better. The whole club is buoyed by it.

It doesn't have to mean bedsheets and bedwetting but apathy has taken hold of the club far too strongly. McGoldrick's parting comments about 'the two clubs have different ambitions' or whatever spelled it out.

We're not going to play well and win every single game but FFS we're Ipswich Town. We're in the third division where clubs like us come to die if they're not careful. The manager is clueless and to be honest I rather hope his plan has been to just ride on the wave of our team being stronger, player for player, than everyone else as it would go a long way to explain the utter mismanagement we've witnessed this season.

Yes we're crap right now, and for some of the above reasons I don't see us really changing that by a huge deal in the near future but we're only going to go in one direction if it's all 'well we can't expect better here' as that frame of mind has played a part in us finding ourselves here.

I know it's more complex than all I've just said but the club needs us to be doing better otherwise we'll just become a lower-division club with the odd brave but doomed attempt to avoid relegation back down here again for the foreseeable.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

A good post, but what's the answer? Sounds like we need a new owner, which we have zero control over.

When are ITFC fans gonna realise we aren't the best team in this league on 13:30 - Jan 29 by SouperJim

So he deserves credit because we aren't mid table and we are a good team on our day?

Of course squad size and wage bill means something. He did very well to kick the losing habit. But a bigger wage bill means we can cater for better players (which we have) and a bigger squad means you can rotate effectively (Which he couldn't do)

Poll: Will Paul Lambert be Ipswich Town manager on the final day of this season ?
