Unfortunately it seems that despite some exceptional moves from the Chinese government the virus has escaped into the world at large. They were slow to start with but they really did try and contain it in the end.

600+ cases in SK now, 12 deaths in Iran (with unofficial rumours of far more) and now 50,000 people unable to leave their towns in Italy along with deaths.

There is a worrying theory that is been carried on the pilgrimage routes before it was detected which would be very bad.

Still small numbers of course when compared to some diseases but the scope is there for the numbers to be far, far higher. The mortality rate of the Iranian cases also seems very worrying.

Someone today was telling me there are conspiracy theories saying the Chinese government exaggerated the risk to influence the price of gold. Although I literally have no idea how or why that would work as I have zero knowledge of how currency values work.

Assume its because of the possible effect of the virus on economies causing a share price drop and therefor investors run to the safety of gold.

There's been talk for a while the 'official' death toll from China is under reported. If the Iranian figures are accurate its very worrying indeed.

As you say relatively small mortality rate at the moment, influenza is still accounting for around a third of a million deaths around the World each year:

Whatever the potential my main worry about the way coronavirus is reported is the panicky nature in news and social media, in Ukraine this has gone even further:

(if you are worried about the virus doesn't it make perfect sense to smash the windows on the bus carrying people into quarantine...)

Should be noted that the best advice still is to wash your hands with warm water and soap, avoid touching your mouth and the rest of your face as much as possible, live as healthy as possible because this virus is most deadly to the elderly and those suffering other diseases or heart conditions.

That's an odd one from whoever told you as if anything I'd say they have downplayed things. They also control the value of their currency and don't really allow it to float via the market.

Generally in situations of uncertainty there is a flight of money into gold as it's seen as safe haven and the markets can be hugely volatile at times of uncertainty.

Interestingly cryptocurrencies have had an upturn since this began, probably for similar reasons.

Your are right that flu is worse at the moment but that's not due to mortality rate (flu is about half that of Covid19) but rather the huge amount of infections each year.

The issue is that if Covid19 escapes into the wild in a big way then there would be as many infections as flu and this a lot more deaths. Essentially like having another flu which is a bit deadlier on top of what we already have and with the chance of mutation increasing as the total population of the virus increases.

If the Iranian numbers are right it's 12 deaths in 66 cases which is approximately 40 times higher mortality rate than flu but that's probably not true. It's more likely Iran isn't catching a lot of milder cases.

You're totally right though, at the moment flu is a far bigger killer.
